First Generation

Anna Maria aka "Mary Caroline" aka "Carrie" Smith was born 4 Oct 1828 in Alsace. She married before 1852 probably in Germany to Henry DONAT (1821-1876) (see DONAT family). They settled in Madison, Jefferson Co., IN by 1859 where Henry is found in the City directory. Henry purchased land in Jefferson Co. the following year. In 1860 they are found in the Federal census. In 1863 Henry and "Carolinia" sold a lot in Madison to John Harvey. She and Henry had seven children, two sons and five daughters.

She married next circa 2 Jul 1878 under the name of Mary Donat to Christian REIN or RHEIN in Jefferson Co. She died 28 Feb 1889 in Madison and the death of Maria Rein bearing the same date is recorded in the Evangelical Lutheran Church records. She was buried 3 Mar 1889 in the Springdale Cemetery, Madison, Jefferson Co., IN. The church records list her burial under the name of Caroline REIN.
