First Generation

Asa SMITH was born about 1799 TN. He moved to Illinois by 1838 and to Iowa by 1842. In 1850 he and his family resided in Union Twp., Van Buren Co., IA. He married by 1833 probably in TN to a woman named Emaline (Emeline) born 1809/10 TN or VA. She survived Asa who probably died between 1850 and 1860. Emeline is listed as head of household in the 1860 Winchester, Union Twp., Van Buren Co., IA census.

Second Generation

The children of Asa and Emeline Smith included:

(1) Ellen SMITH born 1833 TN. She married or died before 1860.

(2) Robert Alexander SMITH born 1838 IL. In 1850 he is called Robert and in 1860 he is called Alexander in the census records.

(3) William SMITH born 1842 IA. He was not residing with his mother in 1860.

(4) Frances E. SMITH was born 7 Jun 1845 IA. She married 30 Aug 1864 Van Buren Co., IA to Andrew Nicholson DONALD (see DONALD family). She died 7 Apr 1908 in Marysville, Marshall Co., KS.

(5) John SMITH was born 1845-50 in Iowa.

(6) Elbert SMITH was born 1848 IA.

(7) Mary SMITH born 1851 IA.
