THE QUAKER MILLS FAMILY
In 1730 John witnessed the marriage of his eldest son Thomas, followed by the signature of a Rebecca Mills who was most likely his first wife and the mother of Thomas. Children by his first marriage were born between 1709 and 1724. Children from a second marriage to a woman also named Rebecca are recorded in the minutes of New Garden MM, NC. These children were born between 1742 and 1757. It would appear that John's first wife died after 1730 and he remarried circa 1740 to the second Rebecca. The second marriage no doubt occured while John and his children were members of Hopewell MM, VA. Unfortunately, the early records of this monthly meeting burned so there is no record of this marriage. The surnames of both wives remain unknown.
* Please note that, contrary to some published references, there is no documented evidence to support that our John was the son of a John Mills who died 1704/5 at Philadelphia MM. Further, his mother was not Sarah Harrold and he never married to a Rachel Bates!
(1) Thomas MILLS was born about 1709. He witnessed several marriages as early as 1731 held at the home of Josiah Ballenger at Monoguisie, MD. In 1738, Thomas Mills and Williams Forker represented Hopewell MM at the Chester Quarterly Meeting. In 1740 he presented his certificate from Opeckan MM to Henrico MM, VA. In 1742 he again represented Hopewell MM at the Chester Quarterly Meeting. He and his brother Hur Mills served on a committee in 1748 at Hopewell to make inquiry about another members behavior. In 1753, the brothers Thomas, Hur and Henry Mills were received at Cane Creek MM, NC from Hopewell MM., VA. Thomas died 10 9th month 1793 at age 84 years and was buried at the Deep River MM Friends Burial Ground.
Thomas married 18 4th month 1730 at the house of Josiah Ballenger at Monocasy, MD to Elizabeth HARROLD (1711-1771), the daughter of Richard Harrold and Mary Beals. Their marriage certificate was recorded a second time in the Monthly Meeting records of New Garden MM, NC as the Hopewell records were destroyed by fire. John Mills, Rebeckah Mills, and Mary Harrold signed immediately below the groom and bride on this certificate suggesting that Rebeckah was the name of Thomas' mother.
(2) John MILLS Jr. was born 27 10th month 1712 Chester Co., PA. He moved to Hopewell MM circa 1732-4. In 1752 he was granted a certificate from Hopewell to Cane Creek MM, NC. He died 18 4th month 1794 at age eighty-two years at Deep River MM, NC. He married about 1732 to Sarah BEALS (1713-1880), the daughter of John Beals and Sarah Bowater. Their children were Sarah m. William Hunt Jr., Phebe m. Abraham Cook; John m. Sarah Millikan; Ann (Elizabeth) m. Edward Bond; Hannah m. Elijah Stanley; Mary m. Thomas Cook; Joseph m. Hannah Maris; Keziah m. Joseph Hiatt; and Rachel m. John Wheeler Jr.
(3) Hur MILLS was born about 1716/7. He married about 1738 probably at Hopewell MM to Rachel HARROLD (1721-1791) the daughter of Richard Harrold and Mary Beals. Hur died 26 11th month 1761 according to the records of New Garden MM, NC. Their children were Charity m. Peter Dillon; Michael; Jemima m. Strangeman Stanley; Micajah m. Mary Hiatt; Amos m. Elizabeth Horn; Elizabeth m. Christopher Hiatt; and Rachel m. Robert Hodgson.
(4) Henry MILLS was born 23 9th month 1720. He died 10 10th month 1810 at age 90 years according to the records of Center MM, NC. He married about 1740 probably at Hopewell MM, VA to Hannah THORNBURG (1725-1791) the daughter of Walter Thornburg. Their children included: Moses; Sarah m. Tarlton Johnson; Margaret; Aaron m. Charity Mendenhall; Hannah m. Manlove Wheeler; Hur; Charity m. Samuel Hoggatt; Joshua; Ruth m. James Johnson; Rebecca and Rachel.
(5) Mary MILLS was born 17 1st month 1723/4 in Maryland or Frederick Co., VA. She married about 1740 probably at Hopewell MM, VA to William BEESON (1721-1760) the son of Richard Beeson and Charity Grubb.
The children by the second marriage John Mills were:
(6) William MILLS born 27 8th month 1742 Hopewell, Frederick Co., VA. Died about 1774 in SC. He married to a woman named Rebecca. He was disowned by New Garden MM, NC in 1763 for attending his sister Rebecca's marriage.
(7) Rebecca MILLS born 15 2nd month 1744/5 probably in Frederick Co., VA but recorded at New Garden MM, NC. She married out 25 6th month 1763 to Henry HUMPHRIES who was hung near Hillsborough at the Regulation Battle in 1771.
(8) George MILLS born 8 10th month 1747. He was disowned in 1769 by New Garden MM, NC.
(9) Benjamin MILLS born 8 10th month 1747 (twin).
(10) Alice MILLS born 22 6th month 1750 probably in Frederick Co., VA but recorded at New Garden MM, NC.
(11) Tabitha MILLS born 8 4th month 1753 recorded at New Garden MM, Guilford Co., NC.
(12) Jonathan MILLS born 14 5th month 1757 recorded at New Garden MM, Guilford Co., NC.
(1) Mary MILLS born 4 12th month 1731, died 1807. She married about 7th month 1754 at New Garden MM, NC to John HOD(G)SON (1731-1804), son of George Hodgson and Mary Thatcher of Roan, NC.
(2) Rachel MILLS born circa 1740, died 24 4th month 1791, married to Robert HODGSON (1738-1813). They requested membership at New Garden MM, NC in 1756. Robert Hodgson married next in 1794 to his wife's niece Rachel Mills, the daughter of Hur Mills.
(3) Richard MILLS was born about 1744 and died 19 10th month 1813 at Lost Creek, Jefferson Co., TN. He married before 1767 to Hannah OZBUN (1745-1833).
(4) Rebecca MILLS was born 30 4th month 1745 and died 20 Sep 1821 Springfield, Wayne Co., IN. She married first 10 7th month 1760 New Garden MM, NC to William MORGAN of Roan Co., NC the son of John Morgan of VA. There were seven children by this marriage. She married second 5 2nd month 1778 New Garden MM, NC to Joseph THORNBROUGH, born 1742, the son of Thomas Thornbrough and Abigail Brown. There were five children by her second marriage.
(5) Reuben MILLS was born circa 1753 and died 3 Aug 1807. He married first 11 Aug 1773 New Garden MM, NC to Cecilia JOHNSON, the daughter of Charles Johnson. They had two daughters - Sarah and Elizabeth. His second wife was Sarah OVERMAN whom he married 7 8th month 1777 New Garden MM, NC. They were the parents of Martha, Reuben Jr., Rebecca, Gideon, and Sally Mills.
(6) Thomas MILLS Jr. was born circa 1760 and died circa 1801. He married 10 11th month 1780 at Muddy Creek Meeting, NC to Jemima JONES, the daughter of Richard and Jemima Jones. She married next in 1801 to Strangeman STANLEY. Their children were Daniel, Richard, Elizabeth, Jemima, Sarah, and Martha Mills.
