LOST LADIES

Help Us Identify These Ladies Without Maiden Names!

Determining the maiden name of female ancestors is one of the most difficult tasks confronting genealogists. If a woman was born in 1807 and died in 1849, she may never appear in the census records under her own name. She is simply a statistic in the 1810 to 1840 census records and her tombstone will usually give only her first and married surname.

Part of the difficulty is the great duplication of female given names. We all have numerous Elizabeths, Marys, Sarahs in our trees, and to complicate matters, they often were called by their nicknames: Lizzie, Polly and Sally. Many women died in childbirth and their husbands usually remarried and often the second or even third wife had the same given name as the first wife. Determining which Elizabeth was the actual mother of your ancestor requires much work.

Tracking down the marriage records which hopefully will provide the maiden name of your ancestor is often very time consuming. Many marriages were never recorded which forces you to closely scrutinize wills, probate and land records in hopes of finding her husband's, father's, grandfathers', uncles', brothers' or sons' records.

Finding a marriage record may not solve the problem of determining her maiden name. She could have been a widow at the time of her marriage to your ancestor, so it is necessary to check for a settlement of a possible first husband's estate, which often was done by her second husband, to be sure you do have her actual maiden name.

If a woman outlived her husband, you still must determine if she was indeed the mother of his children. This involves searching for a will, property division, petitions for, or paying tax on "dower tracts," plus going through deeds and bills of sale, tax payments and any guardian records dealing with her minor children, even though their mother was still living.

Females often appear in the records as someone else's "in-law." Your elusive female ancestor may appear in the records of her brothers-in-law, or sons-in-law, or her maternal grandparents' estates. This research takes time and forces you to research all the children of each of your ancestors for that equally elusive record that provides the evidence needed to prove who she actually was.
