THE QUAKER KEY FAMILY


First Generation

Moses KEY was born about 1675 Chester, England. He came from Middlewich, Chester, England to America about 1700 and settled in Chester Co., PA. He married to Elizabeth YEARSLEY, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Yearsley. They reportedly came from England about the same time as Moses and perhaps they were on the same ship.

Moses made his will 19 2nd month 1746 at Aston, Chester Co., PA. Witnesses were John Bezer, Jane Cummings and Elinor Petters. The will was proved 14 Jun 1748.

Moses Key's Will

In the Name of God Amen. The Nineteenth day of Second Month call April in the year of our Lord God one thousand seven hundred and forty six I Mose Key of Aston in the County of Chester and Province of Pennsilvana Yeoman being weak in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God therefore calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament that is to say principly and first of al I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it and for my body I commend it to the earth to be buried in a christian like and decent manner at the discretion of my Executor nothing doubting but at the General Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God and as touching such wordly estate whereunto it hath pleased God to bless me in this life I give devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form first I give and bequeath to my dearly beloved wife Elizabeth Key all and singular my real and personal estate except what shall be hearupon mentioned to be at her disposall to her and her heirs and assigns forever. And if my son Robert Key survives his mother I do hear by ordain that the rent and property of all and singular of my whole real estate is and shall be allotted for his maintenance during his naturall life I give unto my son William Key twenty shillings. I give unto my son Moses Key all my smith tooles and ten shillings in money. I give to my daughter Letice Vernon ten shillings. I give unto my daughter Elizabeth Morgan ten shillings. I give unto my daughter Rebecka Patten ten shillings. I give and bequeath to my daughter Ann the best feather bed and furniture thereunto belonging and a new chest of doors now called Ann Keys doors with the privileges of my lower room after her mothers decease for her use during the time she lives unmarried and a pacing year old colt and forty pounds to be paid her in one year after my death. I give to my granddaughter Hannah Sharpless five shillings and lastly I do hereby appoint constitute make and ordain my dear and loving wife Elizabeth Key and my son in law Thomas Morgan of the Burrough of Chester to be my sole Executors of this my last Will and Testament and for a gratuity of my love to my son in law Thomas Morgan I give him the said Thomas Morgan five pounds to be paid him after my death and I do hereby utterly disallow revoke and disannull all and every other former testament will and legacies bequests and Executors by me in anyways before this time named called and bequeathed ratified and confirming this and no other to be my last Will and Testament In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year above written.

Signed Sealed published pronounced and delivered by the said Moses Key as his last Will and Testament in the presence of us the subscribers John Bezer, Jane Cummings, Elinor Petters.

N.B. Ye words mothers decease for her was interlind on the second line of this side before signing and delivering. Chester June 14th 1748 then personally appeared John Bezer and Jane Cummings and Eleanor Peters the witnesses for the within Will who on their solemn affns did declare ye they were present and saw the Testator therein named sign seal publish pronounce and declare the within writing to be his last Will and Testament and that at the doing thereof he was of sound mind and memory to the best of their understanding.

Be it remembered that on the Fourteenth day of June Anno Domini 1748 the last will and testament of Moses Key late of the sd County yeoman deceased was proved in due form of law and probate and Letters of Admistration granted to his wife Elizabeth Key and son in law Thomas Morgan sole Executors in the sd Will named being first attested well and truly to administer and bring in an Inventory of the deceaseds estate into the Regr Office at Chester on or before the Fourteenth day of July next and rendering a true and just account of their admon when legally thereunto required Given under the seal of said Office.

Second Generation

The children of Moses Key and Elizabeth Yearsley were:

(1) Lettice KEY born 1703. She married first 21 Oct 1721 to John CHAMBERLIN, son of Robert and Mary Chamberlin, and second 31 8th month 1734 Concord, PA to Thomas VERNON, son of Thomas of Providence, Chester Co., PA.

(2) William KEY born 1705.

(3) Mary KEY born 8 Mar 1707, died 24 Oct 1727. She married 18 9th month 1725 to John SHARPLES at Concord, Chester Co., PA.

(4) Elizabeth KEY born 1709. She married 17 12th month 1731 Concord Meeting House to Thomas MORGAN of Chester, Chester Co., PA.

(5) Moses KEY Jr. born 23 Jul 1711. He is reported to have married 23 3rd month 1744 at Sadsbury MM, Lancaster Co., PA to Susanna MILLS of Newberry Twp., PA. After some misunderstanding with the Friends, he left PA with Squire Boone, the father of Daniel Boone and moved to NC and then to TN.

(6) Hannah KEY born 1714. Died in infancy.

(7) Hannah KEY born 1716. Died in infancy.

(8) John KEY born 1717. He may have married before 14 8th month 1740 to Elizabeth HEALD who was named as Elizabeth Key in the will of John Heald.

(9) Robert KEY born 1720.

(10) Rebecca KEY born 13 3rd month 1722 and married 6 6th month 1740 to Richard PATTON.

(11) Anne KEY born 19 2nd month 1725. She had an illegitimate daughter Rebecca KEY by Mordecai VERNON.

Kate Langworthy descends from Lettice Key and John Chamberlin.

Philip Sharp descends from Martin Key who was b. about 1670 in VA and died before 1706 in King William Co., VA.

Cheska Wheatley descends from Ann Key b. 1722.
