HOLLOWELL FAMILY


Seek proof of the parentage of Thomas Hollowell who died before 1753 leaving a widow named Sarah. Her will reads as follows:

In the name of God Amen I SARAH HOLLOWELL Widow of THOMAS HOLLOWELL Late of Norfolk County Deceased being Sick but Thanks be to almighty God of perfect Sence and Sound Memory I doe ordain this to be my Last Will and Testament. Firstly, I Recommend my Body to the Earth to be Buried in a Christian like and Decent manner at ye Discretion of my Executor. And as Touching what few wordly Goods it hath been plese the Lord to bless me with I give and Despense of in the manner and form as followeth. 1stly- I will & Desure that all my Lawful and Just Debt shoul be Sattisfied & Paid. 2dly- I give & bequeth unto my Son Absolom Hollowell my Stilyards & Ten Shillings in money. 3dly I give and bequeath unto my Daughter MARY BACON my Trunnel Bead, Beadstead & Furniture one gallon Stone Jugg and Thirty Shillings in money. 4thly- I give & bequeath unto my Daughter CHAREITYE SANDERS forty Shillings in money, one pair of Sheets and four yards of Cotton Cloth. 5thly- I give & bequeath unto my son SAMUEL HOLLOWELL one pair of Sheets. 6thly- I give & bequeath unto my Son DEMCY SCUTCHENS HOLLOWELL one Three Gallon Iron Pott and Hooks, one Iron Spitt, one Iron Pestle & Three Pounds in money. 7thly-I give and bequeath all the Remaining Part of my Estate to be Sold to the Best advantage & the money to be Equally Divided between my Two Sons SAMUEL HOLLOWELL & DEMCY SCUTCHENS HOLLOWELL Provided my Son SAMUEL HOLLOWELL Returns from Sea again. And if he does not the money aforesaid to be Equally Divided between my Two Sons ABSOLOM & DEMCY SCUTHENS & my Daughter MARY BACON. 8thly-I doe Ordain Substitute and Appoint my Son-in-law RICHARD BACON JUNIOR to be my whole & Sole Executor of this my Last Will & Testament, hereby making void and Disannualing all other Wills and Testaments heretofore by me made as witness my Hand and Seal this the 1st day of November 1753. The children of Thomas and Sarah (....) Hollowell were:

(1) Thomas HOLLOWELL said to have bequeathed land on the Flatt Swamp, Northampton Co., NC to his brother Absalom.

(2) Charity HOLLOWELL born about 1723, died 23 Jan 1782 Wrightsborough MM, Columbia Co., GA. She married about 1742/4 to Joel SANDERS who died 2 Feb 1782 at Wrightsborough MM. (see SANDERS family)

(3) Absalom HOLLOWELL born 28 8m 1725, wheelwright of Surry Co., VA. He married 19 2nd month 1750 Pagan Creek MM, Isle of Wight Co., VA to Mary HARGRAVE (1722-1790). In 1762 he sold 382 acres in Northampton Co., NC which was sold to Thomas Hollowell 27 Nov 1742 and fell to him by heirship. (Deedbook 3, p. 159).

(4) Mary HOLLOWELL married to Richard BACON Jr.

(5) Samuel HOLLOWELL was "at sea" in 1758 when his mother's will was made.

Third Generation

The children of William Hollowell included:

(1) John HOLLOWELL born about 1623 Flore, Northamptonshire, England.

(2) Thomas HOLLOWELL was born 4 Feb 1625 Flore, Northamptonshire, England. He was transported to the colony of Virginia by Stephen Gill of York Co., VA by 1647. In 1672, he was mentioned by George Fox in a letter written from the Elizabeth River Friends at "Nansemun" who were setting up a men's quarterly meeting at John Fowler's or Thomas Hollowell's." Thomas made his will 13 Mar 1686/7, proved 17 May 1687 Lower Norfolk County, VA. He died 16 1st month 1686/7. He married about 1646 to Alice ----- whose death was recorded 19 9th month 1700 at Chuckatuck MM, VA.

(3) William HOLLOWELL born about 1627 Flore, Northamptonshire, England.


Fourth Generation

The children of Thomas Hollowell and Alice were:

(1) Sarah HOLLOWELL born 11 1st month 1647. Married to Phillip HOWARD of Norfolk Co., VA.

(2) Thomas HOLLOWELL born 22 1st month 1649, died 1693 Norfolk Co., VA. He married first to Mary CAPPS and second to Sarah ----. His children by Sarah named in her will made 1715 were John, Luke, and William Hollowell and Catherine Russell. The will of Thomas adds a son Thomas and daughters Mary and Elizabeth who were probably by his first marriage and not heirs of his widow.

(3) Henry HOLLOWELL was born 18 8th month 1652 West Branch of Elizabeth River, VA. He inherited from his father land on Chinckapin Ridge in 1687. He married (1) 7 8th month 1680 to Elizabeth COTCHING, daughter of Thomas Cotching of Chuckatuck. Henry married(2) 20 2nd month 1693 at his house at Elizabeth River to Mrs. Elizabeth Belson Scott, widow of John Scott. She married 12 1st month 1699/1700 to Benjamin SMALL (1692-1752).

(4) John HOLLOWELL born 22 4m 1655 West Branch of Elizabeth River, VA. He died 10 3m 1671 unmarried.

(5) Joseph HOLLOWELL born 15 6m 1657 West Branch of Elizabeth River, VA. His will was made 5 May 1705 and proved 15 Sep 1705 Norfolk Co., VA. He married to Grace ---. She may have been Grace Corperew Courtney, the widow of ---- Courtney and daughter of John Corperew. Joseph probably had no children.

(6) Benjamin HOLLOWELL born 28 12m 1659 West Branch of Elizabeth River, VA. His died by Apr 1704. He married to a woman named Eleanor. His children were Benjamin, Thomas (?) and Henry Hollowell.

(7) Elizabeth HOLLOWELL was born 9 7m 1662 West Branch of Elizabeth River, VA. She married 13 10m 1687 at her mother's house at Chuckatuck (Nansemond) Monthly Meeting to Nathan NEWBY, son of William Newby and Isabel Williams of Nansemond.

(8) Alise HOLLOWELL was born 15 9m 1664 West Branch of Elizabeth River, VA. She married 25 12m 1688/9 at her mother's house, Nancemond, VA to John SMALL.

(9) Edmond HOLLOWELL was born 5 9m 1667 West Branch of Elizabeth River, VA. He died 10 2m 1687.

(10) John HOLLOWELL was born 5 9m 1672 West Branch of Elizabeth River, VA. He died Jul 1719 in VA. He married 20 2m 1693 to Elizabeth SCOTT born 12 10m 1675, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Scott.


Fifth Generation

The children of Henry Hollowell and Elizabeth Cotching were:

(1) Elizabeth HOLLOWELL born about 1682. She married 18 7th month 1700 to Richard RATLIFF or RATCLIFFE (1672-1724).

(2) John HOLLOWELL born about 1694 Norfolk Co., VA. He married by 1715 to Elizabeth SCOTT, sister of John Scott who m. Elizabeth Belson.

(3) (?) Thomas HOLLOWELL was born about 1696 Norfolk Co., VA. He married to Sarah SCOTT.

(4) William HOLLOWELL was born about 1698 Nancemond Co., VA. He married to Sarah SCOTT at Isle of Wight, VA.
