First Generation

Matthias HATFIELD may have come to America with the colonists who settled at Staten Island under the Patroon, Cornelius Melyn whose daughter Maria "Mary" he later married at New Haven. "Matthias Hithfield" took the Oath of Fidelity 1 May 1660 at New Haven. He also took an oath of allegiance in Elizabethtown, NJ. He appears as "Mathias Helefeild" on the 1670 list of those paying quit rents to the proprietors. He built in 1673 a house in Elizabethtown which descended in the family down to 1880 when it was owned by Robert Morris Hatfield. In 1677 the First Presbyterian Church of Elizabethtown was erected on some of his land. He made his will 19 Apr 1684. Recorded 13 Dec 1687.

He married 25 Aug 1664 in New Haven to Mariken (Maria) MELYN PARADYS. She was the widow of Claes Allertson Paradijs and the daughter of Cornelis Melyn, Patroon of Staten Island and his wife Janneken Adriaens.

Second Generation

The children of Matthias Hatfield and Mariken Melyn were:

(1) Cornelius HATFIELD born 1665/6 in New York City. He purchased land from Col. Richard TOWNLEY in 1690 in Elizabethtown which adjoined the grounds of his brother Isaac Hatfield. He died 22 May 1718 at age 52 years and is buried n St. John's Churchyard, Elizabethtown. He married first to Abigail ---- and second about 1691 to Sarah ----.

(2) Isaac HATFIELD was born abut 1667 Elizabethtown. He died 1709/10. He was married to an unknown woman.

(3) Mary HATFIELD born 1668 Essex, NJ; died young.

(4) Abraham HATFIELD was born 8 Jun 1670 Essex, NJ. He was a cordwainer and also ran a tannery with his brother Cornelius. He died 17 Jul 1706. His will was made 8 Jul 1706 and proved 23 Jul 1706 at Trenton, NJ. He married about 1695 to Phebe OGDEN.

(5) Rachel HATFIELD was baptized 3 Oct 1674 and probably died young.

(6) Mary Hatfield was born about 1674 and died 17 Dec 1742 at the age of 68 years. She married to Richard MILLER who died in 1759.

(7) Elizabeth HATFIELD was born about 1675/6 Essex Co., NJ. She died 28 Sep 1725. Her husband was Maximilian LaLOUR a silversmith in Elizabethtown, NJ.

Third Generation

The children of Cornelius and Sarah Hatfield included:

(1) Anna HATFIELD born about 1694/5 married to Joseph LUDLUM (1675-1765) of Elizabethtown and Westfield, NJ.

(2) Sarah HATFIELD born about 1701 Elizabethtown, NJ. Her will was made 9 Jan 1764 and proved 3 Feb 1764. She married Feb 1724 to John Peter SALNAVE (1701-1743).

(3) Rachel HATFIELD born about 1703 Elizabethtown, NJ. Buried 9 Aug 1793/4 Presbyterian Church, Elizabethtown, NJ. She married about 1717 to George BADGLEY (1693-1759), son of Anthony and Elizabeth Badgley.

(4) Mary HATFIELD born 1703 Elizabeth, NJ; died 1794; married to Cornelius BADGLEY.

(5) Elizabeth HATFIELD born about 1704-7 Elizabeth, NJ. She married to Aaron MILLER.

(6) Cornelius HATFIELD born 1709/10 Elizabeth, NJ. He died 20 Mar 1795. He married to Abigail PRICE (1711-1781).

(7) Joanna HATFIELD born Nov 1714 Elizabeth, NJ and died 12 Apr 1723 at age 8 years 5 months.
