First Generation

Michael FENTRESS was transported to America by Patrick White before 23 Oct 1673. He made his will 2 Dec 1686, proved 19 Nov 1695 Lower Norfolk Co., VA. The name of his wife is unknown.


Second Generation

The known children Michael Fentress were:

(1) John Fentress will made 16 Jun 1769, proved 1 Mar 1770. He married to Mary -----.

(2) Michael Fentress born circa 1650. His will was made 1 Feb 1710/11, recorded 6 Apr 1714 Princess Anne Co., VA. He married to Ann JAMES.

(3) Moses Fentress died 19 Jan 1762, married to Mary WHITEHURST.

(4) James Fentress will made 8 Apr 1740, proved 1744.

(5) Aaron Fentress born circa 1650, died Apr 1714. He married 1666 to Ann ----.


Third Generation

The children of Michael Fentress and Ann James were:

(1) John FENTRISS probably made his will June 1733, recorded 5 Sep 1733 Princess Anne Co., VA. He married to Ann ---.

(2) James FENTRISS born about 1684. He is probably the James Fentris who received 500 pounds tobacco in 1739 from Lynnhaven Parish for keeping Isdells child for one year. His will was made 8 Apr 1743 at age 60 years and was recorded 4 Jul 1744. He married to Elizabeth ----. Their children were Absalom, James, Horatio, Pharo, Leah, Elizabeth, Tamer and Sarah Fentriss.

(3) Michael FENTRISS was the father of Rebecca who m. by 1692 to John SHOWLAND.

(4) William FENTRISS sold land in 1715 and 1716 inherited by his wife Mary MURROW (Murray) from her father. His will was made 28 Apr 1752 Princess Anne Co., VA, recorded 16 Jun 1752. His wife, Mary was christened 20 Dec 1674 Christ Church, Middlesex, the daughter of Alexander Murrow and Mary Batchelder.

(5) Moses FENTRESS made a deed of gift to his children in Feb. 1738. In 1753, with his son Lemuel, sold 50 acres to son Aaron near the Cypress Swamp, Princess Anne Co., VA. He married to Martha -----. Their children included Moses, Aaron, Lemuel, and Hezekiah Fentress.

(6) Aaron FENTRESS was named as son-in-law and executor of the will of Thomas Illife in 1708, Princess Anne Co., VA. The given name of his wife is unknown.

(7) Rebecca FENTRISS married by Feb. 1710/11 to Henry WHITEHURST.

(8) Mary FENTRISS married by Feb 1710/11 to Thomas WILES.

(9) Elizabeth FENTRISS


Fourth Generation

The children of William Fentress and Martha Murrow were:

(1) William FENTRESS Jr. In 1739 he received 200 pounds of tobacco from Lynnhaven Parish for keeping E. Milason for one month. In 1755 he sold 100 acres to his brother Anthony Fentriss for 5 shillings which was left to him by their father William. His estate was inventoried 4 Feb 1771. His daughters inherited 100 acres which they sold 7 Mar 1771 to John Humphreys. William married by 1762 to Martha BOND, the daughter of Bartholomew Bond.

(2) Samuel FENTRESS maried to RUTH ----.

(3) Thomas FENTRESS

(4) Anthony FENTRESS bought in 1755 land from his brother William Fentress. In 1763 he sold 50 acres he had inherited from his father to John Hopkins. In 1770, John Ackiss and Jane his wife sold to Anthony Fentress 50 acres lying on the Eastward side of the land that he was then living on which was part of the patent of Amy Woodhouse. In 1771, with wife Anne sold 84 acres to Caleb Burkill.

(5) Martha FENTRESS received annual support from Lynnhave Parish from 1771 to 1784.

(6) Ann FENTRESS married to ---- BALLENTINE.

(7) Unnamed daughter probably married to Abraham VILLERY.

(8) Liddy FENTRESS may have married her deceased sister's husband, Abraham VILLERY.

(9) Mary FENTRESS


Fifth Generation

The children of William Fentress and Martha Bond included:

On 19 Jan 1771, Lidia Fentress, Angelleca Fentress and William Thornton and Precilla his wife of Princess Anne County, sold land near the head of the River containing one hundred acres more or less, which descended to them by the Death of their Father William Fentress deceased being the same place the said Fentress formerly lived on.houses, buildings, orchards, ways, waters, water courses, profits, commodities, hereditaments and appurtenances..for and in consideration of the sum of Forty Pounds to John Humphry. Wit: Richard Coats, Joseph Corbell, John (x) Etheridge, Jno Wooden, David Savin. Recorded 7 Mar 1771, Princess Anne County, VA.

(3) Priscilla FENTRESS married before 1771 to William THORNTON. (see THORNTON family).
