DONAT FAMILY
The family does not appear in the 1870 census although they are presumed to still be residing in Madison as they are found in the City directories of 1867 and 1875. Their address was "South Presbyterian Avenue, three doors west of the cemetery" and Henry is recorded as a cabinet maker.
Henry died intestate on 1 Oct 1876 near Wirt, Jefferson Co., IN. He is buried in the Springdale Cemetery, Madison, Jefferson Co., IN.
Henry married before 1852 to Anna Maria "Mary Caroline" Smith probably in Germany. She was born 4 Oct 1828 in Alsace. An alternate birthdate recorded in the church record at the time of her death was 25 Oct 1831. She married next circa 2 Jul 1878 under the name of Mary Donat to Christian REIN or RHEIN in Jefferson Co. She died 28 Feb 1889 in Madison and the death of Maria Rein bearing the same date is recorded in the Evangelical Lutheran Church records. She was buried 3 Mar 1889 in the Springdale Cemetery, Madison, Jefferson Co., IN. The church records list this burial under the name of Caroline REIN.
(1) Maria Anna DONAT born 1852 KY according to census records. She died 3 Sept 1874, age 21 years 1 month 10 days. She was buried 5 Sept 1874 at Springdale Cemetery, Madison Co., IN. She married to Amos WOOLEN and was survived by two small children: Carrie Woolen and an unnamed child.
(2) Caroline "Carrie" DONAT was born 14 Jul 1854. She married circa 1878 to James HAMMOND (1836-1901) as a result of being kicked by a horse. Carrie died 2 Jan 1920 and is buried at McKay Cemetery, west of Wirt, IN. They were the parents of nine children, eight of which were living in 1900.
(3) Henry W. DONAT was born June 1858 Madison, Jefferson Co., IN. According to his niece, Henry Jr. had an argument with his father and left town although he is found in Madison, IN after his father's death. He was also not a party to the deed involving the heirs of Henry Sr. in 1894. He married to Mary A. or Roanne SMITH born Jan 1863 in IN. They had seven children in 1900: William H., Mary A., Alice A., Frank O., George, Margaret and Martha C.B. Donat. Nothing further is known of Henry or his children.
(4) Louisa DONAT was born 1861 and died 1883. She is buried in the Springfield Cemetery, Madison, Jefferson Co., IN. She was unmarried.
(5) Elizabeth DONAT was born 1863 and died 1878. She is also buried in the Springfield Cemetery, Madison, Jefferson Co., IN. She was unmarried.
(6) Willliam Alfred DONAT was born 10 Feb 1865 in Madison, Jefferson Co., IN. He was a carpenter and building contractor. He married 23 Dec 1891 Madison, Jefferson Co., IN.to Susan A. DAVIS (1868-1953), the daughter of Urias Riley Davis and Mary C. Speagle. (see DAVIS family). William and Susan Donat moved to Riverside, CA with their adult children and their families in the 1920s. William died there 7 Apr 1945 and Susan died Mar 1953. Both are buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, Riverside, Riverside Co., CA.
(7) Emma DONAT was born 1866 and died 1874. She is buried in the Springfield Cemetery, Madison, Jefferson Co., IN.
(1) Alfred Scofield DONAT was born 25 Dec 1897 Madison, Jefferson Co., IN. He married 25 Jun 1922 Portland, OR to Dorothea BUTTOLPH (1899-1977), daughter of Henry Judson Buttolph and Gertrude M. Kennedy. They resided in Portland and Bend, OR and Riverside and Hemet, CA. They had four children: Jean, William Jr., Robert Kennedy, and Richard Eugene Donat.
(2) Ruth DONAT was born 6 Oct 1900 in Madison, Jefferson Co., IN. She married 3 Jul 1920 in Madison to Arza Omer WHEATLEY (1900-1987), the son of Walter B. Wheatley and Ora Denney. (see WHEATLEY family). They resided in Riverside and Laguana Hills, CA. Ruth died 2 Jul 1994 in Auburn, CA. They had one son, David Wheatley and an adopted daughter Marcia Wheatley.
