DENNEY FAMILY

First Generation

James DENNEY was born about 1787/8 according to the age he provided in his bounty land applications made in 1850 and 1855. Both documents indicate that he enlisted at Wilkes Co., NC in 1814. A Treasury Department document dated 23 Apr 1851 states that James Denney was a private in Captain James Martin's North Carolina Militia and that he entered the services on 1 Feb 1814 and served until 4 Sep 1814.

The name of the mother of his oldest children is unknown. There is a marker for "Tiney consort of James Denny" who died 22 Aug 1839 at age 57 years in Maple Grove Cemetery, Green Twp., Hancock Co., IN. This woman would be the right age to be the wife of our James. A search of the Wilkes Co., NC marriage records has failed to produce a record for James Denney and a woman with this name or a variation thereof.

James Denney married next 12 Jan 1841 in Hancock Co., IN to Catherine HUFFHINES MARSHALL, born 1801/2, the daughter of Jacob Huffhines and Anna Maria Chrisman. Catherine died 20 Mar 1888. and is also buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery. She had a daughter Mary Melissa Marshall born 1840 from her previous marriage to Robert Marshall who was raised by James Denney.

James Denney died 25 Jun 1856 at the age of 69 years 5 months and 25 days. He is buried in the Maple Grove or Olvey Cemetery, Green Twp., Hancock Co., IN.

In Jan 1857, Thomas Martin, administrator of the estate of James Denny stated that a warrant for 80 acres of land came into his hands and he petitioned the court in January 1857 for permission to sell it at a private sale. This was probably the bounty land that James applied for just prior to his death.
