Cyrano de Bergerac is alive and well in this funny, witty tale about best friends Frannie and Marcus. Frannie is quirky and funny and has an amazing fashion sense, Marcus is openly gay and both are looking for love. When Frannie meets Jeff and starts an online flirtation, she depends on Marcus to find the best words to attract him. But when Marcus starts falling for Jeffrey himself, chaos ensues and their friendship is put to the test. M or F? (male or female? Marcus or Frannie?) alternates chapters from Marcus and Frannie's perspectives and is a fast-paced enjoyable read.

Although the focus on the book is romance, a story of completely accepted homosexuality may be too much for some (there are literally no homophobic incidents and everyone's family is completely fine with Marcus's sexuality). However, the language of the book is fairly pure and there are no majorly objectionable events - all the kid characters are virgins seeking their first real relationships and are miles away from sexual experiences. I'm okay with this one in the middle school, although some other reviewers have put this at grades 8 or 9 and up. Highly Recommended.
