David A. Adler

Joe Louis was first a boxing hero, and then an American Hero. Born Joseph Louis Barrow in Alabama, this beautifully illustrated picture book covers his life including the family's move to Detroit, his first taste of boxing, going professional at 20, becoming the "Brown Bomber", losing an important fight to a German boxer, becoming the world heavyweight champion, defeating the Nazi boxer in a rematch, serving his country in World War II, and finally retiring at the age of 37. Fascinating facts are also included in the Author's Notes at the end of the book. This is a fairly comprehensive picture biography that will give students a peek into the life of another American legend. Highly Recommended.
