cover art from Every Man for Himself Every Man for Himself: Ten Short Stories about Being a Guy
Edited by Nancy E. Mercado

Ten contemporary male writers contribute to this compelling collection that is sure to appeal to boys. The tales vary widely from realistic fiction to fantasy, and there is also one in graphic form. There's also an interesting Q&A at the end with each of the writers about what it means to be a guy. None of the stories are patently offensive, but it does contain some profanity and one of the stories is by well-known gay author David Levithan about a homosexual boy who wants to bring a date to his brother's bar mitzvah. Still, the stories will hold a boy's attention, and most have pretty good messages. Highly recommended for high school, some caution advised for middle school.
