These are books four and seven from a new series about girls at a summer camp. Like most series, the characters are varied racially and personality-wise, and each episode features a different girl with a different problem. In Alex's Challenge, a young soccer star is hiding her diabetes from her bunkmates. She also struggles with the fact that she's not interested in boys while many of her friends are, and has a bit of a falling out with her best friend. Of course, things wrap up nicely when she has a diabetic crisis and faints, causing her friends to rally around her.

In Second Time's the Charm, sophisticated city girl Natalie is back for a second year at camp, this time with a boyfriend! New girl Tori seems to be stealing her thunder (and her best friend) while Natalie struggles with dividing her time between boyfriend Simon and best friend Alyssa, who seems to be content to spend her time with Tori. As usual, a misunderstanding leads to a big make-up.

This is a nice series for younger girls - the characters are likable and varied and the plots are interesting and not overly didactic. The language is pure and there is absolutely nothing controversial (even kissing for 12 year old characters amounts to one on the cheek and one on the forehead!). This is a nice, very safe series for upper elementary girls. Highly Recommended.
