Gary Soto

Tough girl Marisa meets nerdy Rene when their cell phones are accidently switched, and a touching friendship develops into a sweet romance. Marisa becomes a better person, learning to control her quick temper, and Rene works hard to bulk up and escape his domineering mother. This story was very light and topical and did not really develop anything in terms of character or plot development, but it was very quick and easy to read and somewhat entertaining. Gary Soto is the foremost name in YA Latino Fiction, and kids will get a bit of insight into Latino culture, as well as an introduction to colloquial Spanish words and phrases that are peppered throughout (handy glossary in the back for those who need it). It's not great literature, but it's fun, and has a very positive message. Recommended.
