
The Newbery Medal

Probably the best know of the awards for children's literature, the Newbery Medal is awarded annually "to the author of the
most distinguished contribution to American literature for children" [from award web site]. In addition to the medal
winner, there are usually several honor books named each year. The award usually goes to works of fiction, but has been awarded
to non-fiction and poetry in the past. The awards are announced each January at the American Library
Association's Midwinter Meeting.
The Caldecott Medal

Michael L. Printz Award

First awarded in 2000, the Printz Award goes to the book that "exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature"

The Coretta Scott King Book Award

Awarded since 1970, the Coretta Scott King Book Award "is given to an African American author and an
African American illustrator for an outstandingly inspirational and educational contribution"--[from award web site].
There are awards for authors and illustrators. Honor books are usually named each year.
Associated with the Coretta Scott King awards is the
John
Steptoe Award for New Talent. One award is given annualy for either text or illustrations.

Best Books for Children: Preschool Through Grade 6
Now in its eighth edition. Organized by theme, this should be a good tool for locating books by curriculum area.
Lists 26,958 in-print titles with a brief annotation. Includes indexes for authors, illustrators, title, subject,
and grade level.
Popular Series Fiction for K-6 Readers: A Reading and Selection Guide
