Female or Male?
When Water Dragons are young, it's very hard and almost impossible to tell if they are a female or a male. When they get a bit older, (in other words a juvinile) several signs begin to appear. For example, males develop much larger heads, with prominent nuchal and mid-sagittal crests of spines. Also, "the  femoral pores (visible as a line of small circular scales on the underside of each rear leg) are much larger in the males than the females." (Mader, 1997, p.100). Males also tend to expand their throats to exhibit mating behavior, or to warn a predator to fight. Some males get very aggressive during mating behavior. Being able to tell the sex of your dragon is very important, especially if you are planning to house more than one lizard together.
Male dragons can grow up to three feet long, while females can grow up to two feet long.
