RITES HELD THURSDAY
FOR CHARLES J. WELLS
WELL-KNOWN MERCHANT

Charles J. Wells, prominent Paintsville businessman and widely
known throughout Johnson and adjacent counties, died at his home
on Fourth Street at 2:50 Tuesday morning following an illness
of two months.

Death was attributed to cancer.

He was born Octobet 14 1905, at Boons Camp, the son of
John B. and Jennie Ward Wells.

The family moved to Paintsville 37 years ago where he attended the
Paintsville Schools and was graduated from Paintsville High School.
He attended Berea Collega, Berea, Ky., and later returned to
Paintsville where he was associated with his parents at the
Big Sandy Hardware.

"Hardware Charlie" as he was known to his many friends, was
blessed with that rare gift for freindship and he held with his
warm personality hundreds of friends who have been saddened to
hear of his illness and shocked at the news of his passing.

Twelve years ago he established "Hardware Charlie" a hardware
and furniture store, and later "Hardware Charlie's Gas Co".

A member of the Masonic Lodge ???  F & AM and the Christian
Church, he was elected vice president of the Kentucky LP Gas
Association at a meeting at Lexington last year.

Surviving besides his parents are his wife, Elizabeth Rice Wells,
one son, Charles Carroll Wells, at Home; two daughters, 
Mrs. Margaret Hernandez. Cayo___ D. F., Mexico; and Betty Rose
Wells, at home.

Other survivors include one brother, J.H. Wells Jr., and
three sisters, Mrs. Irvin Arrowood,
Mrs. Edd Redd and Mrs. Deward Kazee, all of this city.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the
Mayo Memorial Methodist Church with
the Revs Joseph Zavadaky and John Weir officiating.

Burial will be made in the Wells Cemetery under the direction
of the Paintsville Funeral Home.
