Originally Cuzcatlan was called Nequepio, originating from the Olmecs and the Quiche tribes which inhabited the region before the massive emigrations from the north of Mesoamrica/Anahuac.  The Pipils named the region Cuzcatlan, due to the amazing fertility of the land of Nequepio. The origin of the indigenous population of El Salvador is extremely diverse; there were stage before the pre-Columbian stage in which there was a plurality that reunited Amerindas (Indian Americans) or native of the region, Mayan-Quiche' (descendants of the Olmecs; with heavy Maya-Lenca influence) & Nahoa with its direct descendants being the Toltecs or Yaquis, and the Aztecs.
