Artists reconstruction of the burning of Cihuatan.
A giant metropolis once flourished in what is now El Salvador, rising from the ruins of Maya civilization.
The city of Cihuatn has long remained Central America's least known and most spectacular treasure.
Cihuatan ("see-wah-TAHN"), The name means "place of the woman," from the imagined silhouette of a woman ("cihua") lying on her back along the ridge of the nearby Guazapa Volcano.
Guazapa Volcano forms the outline of a womans head and torso, with her head to the left. She is traditionally identified as the "Cihua," an important prehispanic goddess still present in local folklore.
