Sigma Sigma Sigma
A short History taken from "The Path from Farmville"
Tri Sigma's eight Founders; Margaret Batten, Louise Davis, Martha Trent Featherston, Isabella Merrick, Sallie Mitchie, Lelia Scott, Elizabeth Watkins, and Lucy Wright, formed a special friendship at the Virginia State Female Normal School located in Farmville, VA.  Lucy Wright and Lelia Scott led the first meeting of the S.S.S. Club in 1897.  They announced the founding of Sigma Sigma Sigma on April 20, 1898.

These then were the girls who designed the first circle of Sigma friendship.  Perpetuation for their Sorority was the watchword.  In the few years before their school days ended, the Founders chose their successors wisely as they set the standards for growth.  Leaving their Alma Mater at the turn of the century, they realized their dreams of becoming teachers in their own neighboring states.  No matter where they went or what they did, they were never forgotten.  As the night follows the day, as April nurtures new violets, come April at Founder's Day celebrations across our Nation, they are remembered and fondly toasted.  Those who were followed sought ways to increase in strength by forming new chapters.  Henceforth, the work of the Founders would be known as ALPHA, the Mother Chapter.  In the next decade, eight new chapters were installed, a good showing for novices.  From it's beginning, Tri Sigma was destined for the role of pioneer.  Undaunted, she ploughed deep waters with stars and faith for guides.

...Alpha Pi History...
The Alpha Pi chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma was formally recognized by National Headquarters on April 20, 1935.  Alpha Pi was the first Nationally and Locally recognized chapter at Clarion University, followed closely by Delta Zeta.  We continue to uphold the great standards of the original Alpha Chapter of Tri Sigma.
