Recycling is an extremely important process needed to be carried out by all people. With existing world population booms, by the billions over the past 25 years, resources are being used up at alarming rates. Landfills and incinerators are not able to handle all the waste that is produced. Recycling our household waste is one of many ways we can reduce waste to help combat this crisis.
Did you know that everything you see here (photo to right) can be recycled? What do you recycle at your home or office? What more can be recycled? It's easy to find out. Just take a look at the underside of all types of containers from refridgerated food trays, to shampoo and conditioner bottles, as well as film canisters. Junkmail envelops (with plastic windows) can be recycled.
Lowell, Massachusetts recycles plastics #1, #2, and #6. Be sure to check with your local recycling department to find out what you can recycle.
Plastic bags from all sorts of packaging, or like the ones you get at the grocery store may not be recycled curbside in your community. However, facilities do exist in many areas. The grocery store itself may have a recycling bin at the front of the store specifically for plastic grocery bags among others. You could also reuse the bags the next time you go shopping or use them for something else. Look for the recycle symbol.

Unfortunately recycling is not a process that can just happen on its own. It needs help from consumers. Material that is recycled needs to be reused. If it is not reused there is no point to recycling. Packaging companies and office supply stores are big users of recycled goods. Prices of recycled goods are competitive with prices of non-recycled goods. You as a consumer can do your part to make recycling a marketable process by recycling curbside and at bottle and can redemption centers, and by buying goods that use post-consumer waste (recycled material). Every little bit you can do will make a big difference in the long run!
