The Toast
By Brian Paterson Cutler
For Mark and Melanie Cutler on June 23, 2001

This is a toast to everyone who made this wedding possible.
This is a toast to the VFC, you know who you are.
This is a toast to SLU, you know who you are.
This is a toast to the great parenting.  I assume the parents know who they are.
This is a toast to James Taylor.
But most importantly, this is a toast to the newlyweds.

My brother got married today.  He married a pure gem, one of nature's daughters.

I remember when Mark was in Spain, he sent me a long letter.  The one thing that will always stand out in my mind was this one quote, "You know Melanie McGarry?  Well when I get home I'm going to ask her out."  And here they are now.  Who knows what would have happened, had Mel's mother not urged her to date Mark, or Mark's friends urging him to date Mel.  A bold move like that for two young people deserves a lot of credit.
Who knew that it would turn into something so special?  Who knew that this flower would blossum in the moonlight, like a newborn baby?  Who knew that deep down inside they were planning on spending the rest of their lives together?  One look at them means you can see how much they care for one another.

You know, as a kid, Mark liked setting fires and such in our backyard.  You know, as a kid, Mark thoroughly enjoyed blaming things on me.  And you must know that as a kid, I got into a lot of trouble.  I must say, now that he is married I can no longer take responsibility for his actions.  (Note to myself: Look at Hosehead, Mark)  Sorry, dude...

What I can do is wish them well.  I wish them well to continue their glorious story.  A segment of it may have gone like this:
The divine duo wandered out into the waxing moonlight.  They had found a clearing in the forest.  A soft white pine carpet cushioned his knee.  With a simple look into her eyes, she answered, "Yes."  They carried their good news home to their families, the story of companionship is illustrated once again.

Parallel passions have carried them along.  It's what adds to the paradise of love.

Una vez, un gran rey que tenia muchas tierras, un castillo, y tambien un amor.
En ingles: Once upon a time, a king had many lands, as castle, and a true love as well.

En celebracin de los maridos, levantamos nuestros vasos por los compaeros.
In celebration of the newlyweds, let us raise our glasses for the companions.
