Whats your 'Pointe'?
One of the greatest things about ballet is having the ability to dance on the tips of your toes, balancing and twirling. It is a very difficult thing to do, but is made look easy and effortless. The shoes which enable a dancer to dance 'en pointe' are stiffened with a special type of glue and paper. To prevent the dancer from slipping an extract from a tree called rosin is placed on the soles and tips of the shoes. The shoes are then tied on with ribbons to prevent them from falling off and the drawstrings are pulled tightly. The dancer has to pull up tall and try to dance on her toes, not leaving the shoes with all the work, because this makes a dancer look heavy.
