Media Grading System

Below is the grading system I use to grade the quality of the games I have on vhs / dvd. The grading system works with alphabetical system that is used on school report cards (ie - A,B,C...). See the column Media Grade under the game collection pages. I'm being honest about the quality of my games, I expect the same from you.

Grade Description
A "A" level game quality would...
DVD quality: XP mode on DVD. The video and audio quality would be excellent for DVD.
VHS quality: Master copy VHS recorded at SP mode on VHS. The video and audio quality would be excellent for VHS.
B "B" level game quality would be...
DVD quality: XP/SP combo mode (sometimes called FR "flex recording" on DVD. The video and audio quality would be good to very good for DVD.
VHS quality: 1st generation VHS recorded on SP/LP mode. Also, master copy of LP mode and possibly SLP mode. The video and audio quality would be good to very good for VHS.
C "C" level game quality would be...
DVD quality: 2nd/3rd generation VHS in SLP mode burned to dvd. The video and audio quality would be average, nothing outstanding but something you could watch and enjoy.
VHS quality: game quality would be master copy games recorded in SLP mode on VHS. Some 2nd/3rd generation copies recorded in SLP mode on VHS can sometime meet this standard also.
D "D" level game quality would be...
DVD quality: 2nd/3rd generation VHS copies recorded in SLP mode dubbed to DVD. Also, DVD dubs older VHS SP mode copies starting to lose magnetic strip thus hurting game quality reliablity. These games may sometimes be jumpy, blury and/or have inconsistent video and audio quality. The video and audio quality would be below average. These games would still be watchable and something you would enjoy. If the game is really truly unwatchable it would be given an "F" grade.
VHS quality: 2nd/3rd generation VHS copies recorded in SLP mode. Or older VHS SP mode copies starting to lose magnetic strip thus hurting game quality reliablity. These games may sometimes be jumpy, blury and/or have inconsistent video and audio quality. The video and audio quality would be below average. These games would still be watchable and something you would enjoy. If the game is really truly unwatchable it would be given an "F" grade.
F "F" level game quality would be...
DVD quality: 2nd/3rd+ generation VHS copies recorded in SLP mode dubbed to DVD. Also, older VHS SP mode copies starting to lose magnetic strip thus hurting game quality reliablity. These games are generally not good and are for die hard collectors only (Better to have a copy of the game, then no game at all). Game is consistently jumpy, blury and/or have inconsistent video and audio quality. The video and audio quality would be poor. These games would still be watchable but in very poor condition.
+ "+" refers to a positive bonus about the games that I have not related to game quality. The game may have local Syracuse news and/or ESPN coverage of the game (ie - College Gameday, 11pm local news, sportscenter, etc.). May also have commerical editing also. The "+" would work with the grading system (ie - A+, B+, etc).
- "-" refers to a negative bonus about the games that I have not related to game quality. The game may be missing portions of the game due to network coverage starting late or delayed recording errors on my part or traders part. The "-" would work with the grading system (ie = A-, B-, etc).

Example of the Media Grading System

  • A+ would be a master copy of a game recorded on DVD in XP/SP mode with excellent video/audio. The game would have bonus pre/post game coverage from ESPN or local news and have some or all commercials edited out.
  • B could be a master copy game recorded on VHS in SP mode. The video/audio quality would be good. No bonus coverage or commercial editing done.
  • C- could be a master copy game recorded on VHS in SLP mode. The video/audio quality would be average. Game maybe missing portions of game due to network arriving late from a previous game that ran late.
Any questions or confusion about the media grade - please send me an email and I would be glad to clarify or give you a more detailed description of the game quality.
