EARLY ROCKTON SETTLER DIES W.H. Osborne Rites Monday At Beloit Beloit, Wis., August 27 - William Henry Osborne, 83, oldest continuous resident of Rockton who came to the village in 1865 when it boasted three paper mills, a furniture factory, and a population larger than that of Rockford, died at 1:30 p.m. today at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F.R. Wigley, 1043 Elm street. When Mr. Osborne moved from Rockton two years ago to make his home with his daughter here, he had lived there 76 years. Before his retirement, he had been employed 35 years by the Yates Machine company in Beloit. Born in Rome, N.Y., on March 21, 1860, he was a child of five when he came to Rockton with his parents. He married Mary Alice McCue of Rockton at St. Thomas Church in Beloit in 1882, Mrs. Osborne died seven years ago. Surviving, in addition to Mrs. Wigley, is another daughter, Mrs. E.J. Scofield of Beloit; two sons, Fred and V.L. Osborne, both of Rockton; five grandchildren, Pvt. Vincent Kaeser, Camp Pickett, Va., Fireman First Class Paul Osborne, serving with the Hawaiian fleet, Mrs. Richard Carlson, in training at St. Mary's hospital, St. Louis, Mo., and Mary Jo and John William Osborne, both of Rockford; also two brothers, Tom Osborne, Tampa, Fla., and George Osborne, Rockton. Funeral services will be held Monday at 8:30 a.m. at the Daley funeral home, Beloit, and at 9 a.m. at St. Jude's Catholic church of which Mr. Osborne was a member. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery in Beloit. Rosary service will be held at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. |
