Currency exchange involves the buying and selling on the international exchange market. Known as FOREX (FOReign EXchange market) for short. Begun in 1970, when free exchange rates and floating currencies were introduced. Only members of the market influence the price of one currency against another, based on the supply and demand for the respective currency.
It is substantially easier to make money in currency exchange than say the stock market for a number of reasons. The largest of which is that it is free of external controls, and that its virtually impossible to be manipulated. Its also the single largest liquid financial market, with trade volume approaching one to one and a half trillion dollars a day. With numbers like that its easy to see how a single investor such as yourself would find it unreachable to affect the price of a major currency. In addition, the liquidity of the market means that unlike rarely traded stocks, FOREX traders are able to open and close their positions within a few seconds as there are thousands of willing buyers and sellers.
It could be said that FOREX is slightly similar to trading stocks in that the people who participate in it, are so varied. Investors are so different, that they buy and sell for different reasons. Some are long term buyers, using a buy and hold mentality, while others buy on credit to lock in huge short term gains. With so many buyers and sellers, on a daily basis, you'd really have to try to lose money.
A final reason for wanting to invest in currency exchanging is that its open just about all the time. Because foreign currencies aren't centralized on a single exchange, but rather take place all over the world via telecommunications. Trading is available 24 hours a day, Monday through Friday. Just about anywhere in the world there are dealers ready to quote on all major currencies. After deciding which currency to invest in, you'd do so with one of these dealers. Its even possible to speculate by buying currency on credit, which is available to individuals with as little as $500 to invest.
