Try Before You Buy

Before hitting the department store, read these tips for getting the best out of the beauty counters.

Avoid the lunchtime rush
"If you show up during the mornings or afternoons, you're more likely to get the salesperson's undivided attention," says Bree from Chanel at David Jones.

Be confident
It takes a bit of front to go from counter to counter asking for samples. Some sales staff may think you're not a genuine customer but a freebie hunter. Be honest about your aims and objectives, exude confidence and you're sure to emerge with a fistful of trial-sized products.

Don't feel pressured to buy
Beauty products have so many active ingredients that you want to be sure you're purchasing the best products for your skin. It's perfectly acceptable to take home the testers and use them for a couple of days before you make your big investment.

"If customers are using samples to ascertain which ones are best for them, I only ask that they take a day or so break between trying different ranges," says Sylvia from the Clinique counter at Grace Bros. "That way, if you get an allergic reaction, it'll be possible to isolate the product that's to blame."
