Kids and Dogs
Home
It is very important to teach your children the do's and the don'ts regarding dogs. If you own or are going to own a dog it is maybe one of the most important lessons you can teach your children. Your dog may be the most gentle dog and he wouldn't hurt anyone including your children but what about the neighbours dog or the dog down the street?  However it is unfortunate that children grow up believing that all dogs are friendly and gentle like their pet and fall victim to a vicious attack from a strange dog. This happens because the children were not taught when it is not safe to approach a strange dog.
  1.  Don't run up to a dog, even if the dog is known to be kind it may surprise him..
  2. Don't try to touch a neighbor's dog without permision, not even through a fence.
  3. Never touch a dog that is growling, showing his teeth, or barking hysterically.
  4. Don't let your young children approach dogs without a grown-up's supervision.
  5. If your child has the ok to pet a dog, hold the hand out (in a fist, so the dog can't nip the fingers) and allow the dog to sniff the hand.
  6. Never let the child grab at a dog.
  7. Never let the child touch a dog that is eating or chewing on a bone or treat.
  8. Teach your child not to poke the dog or pull his tail etc..
  9. Tell your child, he/she is to always ask the owner for permision to pet the dog.
10. The child is to keep it's face away from the dog's.
11. Don't make loud noises or sudden moves when approaching a dog. Speak softly to it.
12. Never ever leave a child with a dog unattended.
