Molly's ORTs
ORT 1-- Why is it okay that we can't understand God?
In Dr. Halls' Discussion of God's transcendence, he remarks that it is impossible for humans to grasp teh idea of God, but that its okay. This is very atypical of the way most people think. People are often looked down upon when they hold "empty" beliefs, and fail to supply evidence to support them. It is expected that if one is to make a statement that he or she if also able to back it up with facts and support. When foriming opinions on deep or moral issues, it is necessary that one takes that time to contemplate on his or her beliefs and values, then form an opinion from there. It is a relief to know that when it comes to God, we do not have to throroughly contemplate who He is. It is ironic that no matter how many times we are told or say that God is infinite and indefinable, we still try to figure Him out. This is not necessary, Hall says. And how should we able to understand Him, if we are not able to fully understand the terms with which we describe Him? (What is the definition of infinite?) It is faith that allows us to know God without being able to understand Him.
The definition of transcendence that Hall says applies to God is that of "otherness." God is so "wholly other" there is no way that we may understand Him. As Hall puts it, He is "un-get-at-able." Though we are not able to "get at Him" we must still contemplate our belief in Him. Perhaps this is the reason why people try so hard to get their mind around who or what God is. This is logical. One would try to understand what abortion is before he or she forms an opinion on it. God, however, is anything but logical. Rational approaches to things in our world do not apply when it comes to the realm of God.
So why is it that, umlike most other beliefs I hold, I cannot understand God, yet I believe in Him? I believe the answer to this is faith. I, for example, sense God in my grandmother, who is very spiritual and always reminds me of how much God loves me and how much love God has given me to share. I do not know why I feel God's presence in when I am around my grandmother, but that does not take away from teh fact that I do. Faith allows me to trust that what I am sensing is God, and this same faith is the basis of my belief in him.
Belief in God is really a matter of faith. Faith is the crucial bridge betwen one and God because there is no way to understand, and thus, fully know God. It is faith that allows us to trust that He is there, even when we have no other solid facts or evidence to back up our claims.
