| -In Confucianism, you are defined by your relationships "The father must be a father, and the son must be a son." -Sacrilege is breaching the rule of propriety - only "sin" is not fulfilling proper role in relationships -Everyone is capable of li, therefore failure to attain it is sacrilege History and Background Meng-tzu (Mencius) (4-3c. BCE) Hsun-tzu (3 c. BCE) opposed leaders -intrinsic goodness of human -malignant nature -unwillingly submit to social -rules/rituals internalized constraints express individual will -No feelings between ruler/subject -paternal feelings between ruler -it is a practical relationship and subjects -impersonal, legalistic relationship -orderly, positive, humane, between people loving relationship -Ching and Han dynasty adopt between people his thought -Mencius is more influential in the end. It is more optomistic, and closer to Confuciu's view of the world |
