| J John Wesley (1703-1791)- Anglican priest, who left the church to found his own church, the Methodist church in which follwers followed John Wesley's "method" and rode by horseback in circuits around the North American frontier to bring the Methodist Church to frontier families and settlers. Joseph Smith(1805-1844)- founded the Jesus Christ Church of Latter Day Saints, also known as the Mormon Church, and published the Book of Mormon which is regarded as scripture within the church. Believers think the church is pure and the kingdom that god intended his people to have. In the late 1940s, after the death of Smith, his sucessor, Brigham Young moved the church to Utah, where its headquarters still is still loacted. Judaizers- Jewish Christians who believed that one must become Jewish before the become Christian. They disagreed with Paul's view that one could be Christian without abiding by Jewish law or becoming Jewish first. Paul believed one should live by the "Spirit," while Judaizers believed in living by the Jewish law. K kergyma- a proclamation by the early christian church and/or its follwers. Peter made a proclamation on Pentecost that Jesus was "Lord and Christ," meaning that he was the Messiah God promised to send. L liberation theology- presentation of Church teachings that emphasizes that Jesus lifts the poor and opressed out of their suffering. They try to bring justice to the poor and oppressed and challenge the church to change the government to help these people in need. Lutherans- a major Protestant denomination which follows the teachings of Martin Luther who split from the Catholic Church when he nailed his 95 Theses to a church door at Wittenburg. Lutherans emphasize the Bible and scripture. M Martin Luther King Jr.(1929-1968)- African-American Baptist minister who led the civil rights movement, and, along with many others, helped to fight racial injustice in the United States and return dignity to the lives of minorities in America. King adopted non-violence methods used by Ghandi to fight the injustcie that oppressed him and other minorities. Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910)- founded the Christian Science Church and wrote Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. She founded the Church in order to compromise Christianity and the gospel with new scientific findings. Her intention was to have all member belong to a mother church in Boston, but now there are mostly local congregations of members. Messiah- the "anointed one" that the Jews believed God would send to Earth, and relieve them of their oppression. In the Chrisitan view, this is the person of Jesus, but in the Jewish view, the Messiah has not yet arrived. Methodists- follow the teachings of John Wesley who founded the Methodist Church in the 18th century. miracle- believed to be brought about by divine intervention in ordinary events of history. Jesus preformed miracles when he healed people and influenced natural phenomena. monophysite- believed that Jesus was only of a divine nature. This was seen as a heresy and at the Council of Chalcedon it was denounced when the council decided that Jesus was both essentially divine and human. mystery religions- Greek religions in which members were promised eternal life. Paul wrote to many of these churches to try to convert them to Chrisitianity. Some of these letters are in the Epistles of the New Testament. |
