May 8, 2006:

We were able to schedule a quick referral to University of Iowa Hospital and Clinic for Radiology Oncologist, Medical Oncologist plus schedule an MRI to investigate lesions on liver from Abdominal CT - all on Tuesday, May 9. We quickly got the local referral approval and scans/reports from doctors, hospital, and clinic plus insurance. Our surgeon called Kathleen to discuss the positive margins for DCIS and possibly going back into surgery to remove. He wanted us to discuss the idea with Iowa doctors, because he felt confident that there was a chance he could remove more tissue and get rid of the DCIS (in-situ cancer that doesn't respond to chemo, and is best to be removed surgically - if we could eliminate radiation to chest wall). This was completely new information to us. We received a fine-print, 4-page pathology report (which wasn't yet read to us with a doctor present- our first appt following surgery is scheduled for Thursday). After reviewing the extensive document, neither of us understand that cancer was still present - that the margins were not clear. How disappointing to learn this. The idea of 2nd surgery was a hope to rid the cancer then start treatment, Since they are microscopic cells and it isn't precisely clear where they are, it could be a wild-goose chase. What to do?
