Episodic Memory Activity -

You have to shape the memory. Pick out something that is a preference, a success, a shared triumph, an obstacle that he overcame put in memory book,

“read” share the memory book frequently using same key words.

show the photo soon after the event while it's still fresh

help encode the memory by creating a simple "caption" or label to the event - key words

focus on photos showing positive emotions, photos showing him in competent roles.

Don't worry if he does not respond - declarative communication requires no response

Referencing Activity

hold hands and march side by side .... after a few steps come to an abrupt stop and look down at him. wait till he look up, now he's already looking at me to see what I will do next. Once we have had good referencing I either jump up in the air, or bend down with a deep knee bend, or turn in the other direction. Then, we begin to march again. I always vary the number of steps I take and how I march. You can march with stiff extended legs, like a toy soldier, or with knees high up in the air, like a majorette, or little shuffle steps... or whatever you can think of.

Buzz if wrong, frown and nod "no" if he's wrong or when he guesses right (ding,ding,ding). smile and nod "yes"

Flexible Thinking Activity

Silly Attention Getting Acts , do something out of character for situation.

Pretend Bubbles - Pretend to have a jar of bubbles, open, blow, try to pop, ect.

Mixy Mixy Pick….Hide an object in one of your hands. Put your hands behind your back, shuffle the object back and forth. Bring your hands back out, palms down and fists closed. has to guess which hand the object is in by touching your hand

Balloon Toss-Back and forth between partner and coach. Lots of facial expression, giggles, etc. (sitting, standing, laying on floor)

Throwing stones (marbles?) in a pond/puddle (bucket) - Coach hands partner a stone, partner throws it in water. Insure attends to face
