antedeluvian desire

in these antedeluvian hours before the dawn
before briny markets open
while catch is netted
entwined limbs transform to fin
we swim to sheltered cove
mouths gape, gasp for air

with you around i smell of fish
taste of elemental sea
fine teleost
you come milkily
over our breakfast eggs
to understand
daybreak repast
nourishment of mind and flesh

i gather the morning paper
wrap you in it
seasoned with vinegar
taste the salt lingering sweet
become the siren
lure you to rocks
take you down
in whirlpools of sheets and sweat
again we feel the misted scent of sea
waves of your longing
crest and crash 'round me
