Introduction: 

AIDS is a disease that affects a worldwide population.  It has been estimated that 34.3 million people all over the world have AIDS(http://ln.infoplease.com/ipa/A0106323.html).  Educating people about AIDS has come a long way since the announcement of AIDS in 1981.  However, there are still many people in the world who are uneducated about AIDS.

Task: 

Congratulations!  You have been elected to be the AIDS Awareness Club committee in your school. It is each committee members job to become an expert on AIDS and to work as a group to create an AIDS awareness campaign for your school.  The campaign will involve creating an AIDS awareness poster for the campaign.  It will also include a skit where each committee member will take on a different role at a mock AIDS conference.

Process: 

A.     Poster
 

1. Each person in the group needs to create an AIDS awareness poster.

2. The poster needs to be 11 x 17 inches.

3. The poster needs to promote awareness ( or educate people) about AIDS.

4. The information on the poster can include statistics or other information found on the web sites found on the e-sheet.

5. If you use information from the web, you must document the web address of the web site you got the information from.

6. The poster should be constructed neatly.

7. The poster should be organized and creative.

8. The poster should be school appropriate.


 
B.    Skit

1. Each person in the group needs to choose one role for the skit.

      a.  A heterosexual person who contracted HIV through the blood supply in 1984
       b.  A representative of a drug company that develops drugs to treat people with   AIDS.
       c.  A doctor from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) that is in charge of AIDS research.
       d.  A representative from the United Nations (U.N.)
       e. (only use if you have 5 group members) The representative from the Food and Drug Administration  (FDA).

2. Each role has certain characteristics. (after choosing a role, click on the link to find information to help develop the role for the skit).

     a.  Heterosexual with AIDS:  This person is very concerned about educating people    about the stereotypes of HIV and AIDS.  They don't want people to be afraid of people who have AIDS.  This person does unhappy with the high cost of drugs for the treatment of AIDS.

      b.  Representative of an AIDS drug company:  This person thinks that people with HIV or AIDS should definetly be taking drugs for the treatment of AIDS.  However, this person is also wants to make a profit from selling the drugs to pharmacies, because, after all he/she is a business person.  The drug company that this person works for is constantly working at developing new drugs for the treatment of AIDS.  They would like to see these drugs approved by the FDA in a timely manner so that they can market the drugs as soon as possible.

       c.  CDC Doctor:  This person's primary concern is that people all over the world are educated about HIV and AIDS.  They want to stop the AIDS epidemic.  They are also trying very hard to find a cure.  This person is concerned about the availability of treatment drugs for AIDS.

       d.  Representative from the U.N.:  This person is concerned about the third world countries with the highest population of people with AIDS.  He/She wants to work towards making treatment for AIDS more available in the third world countries.  He/She wants to try to stop the spread of the AIDS epidemic in the third world countries.

       e.  Representative from the FDA:  This person wants to be sure that all drugs for the treatment of AIDS be tested to be sure that the drugs are safe.  This person is not fond of pushy drug companies.

3. The scenario for the skit is a conference with all of the above people.  Your group can decide what location the conference will take place.  The main topics of discussion are: 
        a.  Developing ideas about educating people about HIV and AIDS.
        b.  Making treatment drugs more available.
        c.  Helping control the epidemic all over the world.

The conference could easily contain conflicts among its participants due to the difference of opinion and/or what each person is concerned about the most.

4. The skit needs to be at least 4 minutes long. 

5. The skit needs to be creative.

6. Each role needs to be informative about HIV or AIDS (from each perspective role).

7. Each person should create and then memorize their own lines.

8. The skit needs to be well rehearsed.

9. Each group member needs to try to be flexible and cooperate with the other group members.

10. In no way should the skit contain information that is not appropriate for school or information based on stereotypes.

Conclusion: 

In conclusion, you will have learned some new information about AIDS.  You will also have a new perspective as to what it might be like to be someone who has AIDS or someone who is continuously working with AIDS related topics.
