I need to preface my story first by saying that I have no idea what I saw - just that the mystery of what I saw has stayed with me and like all other unexplained events in my life, it's subject to interpretation.
This past September, I was camping with family and friends - attending the Enchanted Mountain Goddess Conference that my neice organized. It was held at my favorite place on earth - the "Enchanged Mountains" of Alleghany State Park. I have been camping in that park since I was an infant. All of my fondest memories of family outings center around that park and it's lovely forests and streams.
I and another of our intrepid group, Bonnie S, were in the counselor's cabin of Camp Alleghany, where the conference was being held. It was night, and our cabin faced a large field. Beyond that was an access road that wound up the hill to a former ski hill. Bonnie and I were watching Close Encounters of the Third Kind on a portable DVD player I had brought along. Perhaps this was what prompted our mysterious light encounter. After all, the imagination is a powerful thing when engaged, and being surrounded by woods, in the dark of the night watching Roy Neery on that lonely road in the middle of the country - I am bound to be influenced.
All evening, campers with bright spot lights in their vehicles would travel through the park "spotting' deer. On that access road, I watched a procession of vehicles traveling up and down, lights searching the darkness for deer. As I looked out the window, I saw a set of lights coming down the road. These lights were different - I said to Bonnie - "that's weird, look at those lights....what the heck do you think those are? They don't look like the rest of the spotters......." As we both watched, the lights started moving independently, slowly circling each other and meandering backwards and forwards. Also, the color of the lights were different. Instead of the regular "bright" highbeams and single spotlight, these lights were comprised of 3 lights - one small red light - and two larger bluish lights, one of which was slightly less blue than the other. They slowly moved down the access road and as I watched, they started to move across the field near the road used to get to the camp. I remember saying to Bonnie as I watched their slow progression down the road "what do you think those are - they can't be bicycles - it would be suicide to ride a bike on that road at night even with a spotlight. They can't be headlights because they aren't moving together - they keep circling each other....what do you think they are?" She was as mystified as I was. As I watched from the doorway after turning off the porch light - they started moving across the field towards the camp and I started to feel anxious - thinking to myself - they are COMING THIS WAY. As the feeling of anxiety built - the lights just backed up and started to move back up the access road. Not down towards the camp grounds, but back up the road. I watched for an hour or two afterward, sitting, facing the window and I didn't see the lights come back down. Most of the deer spotters came back down after traveling up the road and turning around and no one was on the road for more than a half hour at best.
I told that story to someone else at a recent gathering - her question to me was simple as I started to explain - she said to me - when you started to feel anxious, did the lights back off? I said yes, they did. She just smiled knowingly and said, that's how it was for me............as soon as I started to feel anxious, they backed off.
This just goes to prove - maybe my imagination was heighened due to watching Close Encounters, but I am not alone when it comes to sighting "mystery lights." So I have to ask myself - did I see something that was easily explained if I was given a different persepctive? For instance, if I had been on that road WOULD I HAVE SEEN SOMETHING COMPLETELY NORMAL or, would I have experienced the same "strangeness". Did I, like Roy, have a "Close Encounter?"
