Phil's article cont'd:

crash context with UFOs. Excessive heat buildup in the cockpit of a French test aircraft  forced a UFO pursuit to be cut off in the Pyrenees Mts. In 1954, while the crash of a U.S. fighter jet in Walesville, N.Y. in that same year involved pilot ejection due to extraordinarily rapid and intense heat buildup when in pursuit of an Unidentified.

Two other incidents may be relevant  to our topic as well. On March 12,1965 a well liked Fort Myers, Fla. rancher, James Flynn,  took a swamp buggy and his four dogs hunting with him in the Everglades near Big Cyprus Indian Reservation. While trying to retrieve his dogs after they dashed away after a deer, he encountered a bright orange airborne light descending over the marshes. As he came closer the light resolved itself into a metallic flattened cone-shaped object. It appeared to have four tiers of windows and was about 70 feet in diameter. It gave off a whirring, ringing sound as it descended toward the ground. Approaching to within the circle of orange light cast by the craft, Flynn waved his hand in greeting. Receiving no response, he waved again. This time a short white beam flashed out, hitting him dead square between the eyes. He passed into unconsciousness for several hours, and awoke in a debilitated state, with partial blindness. He managed to drag himself into his boat and stayed with an Indian friend on the reservation for several days before he was well enough to return home and receive treatment. His partial blindness and loss of various body reflexes were documented and persisted for several weeks after the encounter.

Another episode of seemingly gratuitous violence concerned young Gregory Wells of Bealsville, Ohio. On March 19,1968, Gregory was hauling a picnic jug full of water from his grandmothers house to his familys trailer next door.About 8:30 P.M. Gregory heard a  sound resembling a generator and, looking back over his shoulder, saw a luminous red football shaped object above two large trees about 150 feet away. As the boy stared in open mouthed curiousity, a tube like projection emerged from the bottom of the object and swiveled around in his direction. Frightened, the boy began to run away, but was hit by a glowing red beam which set the sleeve of his jacket on fire and burned his arm and shoulder. His terrified cries brought  out both his grandmother and his mother, who fleetingly saw the object as it mysteriously faded  into nothingness. Examination at the local hospital found 2nd degree burns on both his shoulder and his upper arm. Further inquiry by investigators from the Aerial Phenomena Research Organization (APRO) found other witnesses to the same luminous object on that evening.

The award for the most gruesome, however, certainly would go to Brazilian cases revealed by  the research of journalist Bob Pratt  in the 1970s. Pratt recounted in his book UFO Danger Zone a number of instances of apparent UFO attacks on local people in Brazil. The best documented of these  were on the island of Colares, about 30 miles from city of Belem. In 1977 a Brazilian military unit mounted an expedition to the island to investigate multiple reports of close encounters  and subsequent injuries allegedly inflicted by the UFOs on local residents. Captain Uyrange Hollanda and his unit interviewed dozens of witnesses, inspected and medically assessed the injured and photographed, sketched and videotaped UFO encounters of their own while on the island. They also interviewed Dr. Wellaide Carvalho, a young Brazilian public health official who was the only doctor on the island at the time. Dr. Carvalho  examined and treated 40 individuals in a three month period  with similar burns, all attributed by the victims to exposure to a ray from a UFO type craft. The burns generally covered 10-20 centimeters(4.5-7 inches) of skin, with a quickly peeling rash, and often centered on one or more small punctures. Almost all of the patients recovered quickly, but two people did die in the immediate aftermath of the attacks. Both died on the same day as they were examined, one of a heart attack and the other of unknown causes. The documentation collected by Hollandas team was sent to Brazilian Air Force headquarters where it was inaccessible to public inspection, although both  Captain Hollanda and Dr. Carvalho went on record about their findings in published interviews. It took a change in the Brazilian government and an open house  for Brazilian UFO researchers at Air Force headquarters to finally allow researchers to gain access to the documentation in 2005. Further investigation  in this area of Brazil  does seem warranted, however; Pratt details a number of other less well documented cases of injuries, severe and debilitating, attributed to UFO aggression against Brazilian residents.

What to make of these cases? Taken together, they appear to indicate a pattern of interaction difficult to square with a wholly non-hostile intent. Possibly, in the Itaquiero report, we have injury as an unintended outcome of  the energy products of the craft itself, or perhaps a device whose primary purpose was related to the disabling of the power supply in the fortress. But in all the other cases it appears the attacks were unprovoked and the human definitely unthreatening.  The description of the injuries inflicted, the reports by Brazilian witnesses that the lights seemed to seek out and to search for victims are suggestive of an almost sadistic intent. Recently I was gifted with a smiling E.T. doll from a faculty friend. I think now I may quietly  pass on this prize to a child who lives in happy ignorance of these reports.
