PEPPER SPRAY EFFECTS
You first get sprayed, it feels a little warm, but not to bad then 15 sec go by, now it's starting to burn. 1 minute goes by now and it feel like your face is melting. After about 5 minutes it recycles it self. If you try to wash it off, all you do is reignite and that's the last thing you want to do. It took me 2 hours to open my eye up.
I felt like someone poured gasoline on my face then lit my face on fire. And my eyes... I thought they were melting. After rinsing out my eyes for a few minutes and sitting in front of a fan, the feeling was going away, but my face still burned extremely bad. Then as if by magic, the pain instantly disappeared. I'd say all effects (except for bloodshot eyes) were gone within 15 minutes or so...
just graduated the police academy at the end of January.. I had to do my OC spray about 1month 1/2 ago.. I must say that it was a very uncomfortable experience.. They only used 5.5 also, and i felt like i was sitting inside of an oven and my skin was burning off my face.. It didnt really bother my eyes too much, it was just the burn.. It was horrible.. As a female, i must say that i wouldnt want to do it again, but, i now know that if i was to get sprayed with it, it would make me fight harder
My DT instructor training class was sprayed last year at FLETC. 3 guys ended up with scratched retinas. It looked extremely painful and they had to wear patches. The class looked like a pirates reunion meeting. Words can't describe the pain of getting sprayed
I just got sprayed with some "Sabre Red" 10% Oleoresin Capsicum, rated at 2,000,000SHUs. All I've got to say is that I will NEVER go thru that training again.... I'll go back to the jail before I do that again.... Supposedly it was suppose to only take about 5 minutes max before you could easily keep your eyes open....... Not me, took me 50 MINUTES before I could even pry my eyes open..... They had a sprinkler system set up, simular to a water fountain. Every time I went to stick my eyes in the water, it felt like I was chokeing..
OC is the most painful thing that I have ever experienced. Very bad stuff. It hurts like hell for about 30 minutes, then dissapates fairly quickly. When I got sprayed, they had a water hose on for us to use after they abused us for a few minutes. The water helps, but it seems to burn just as bad as soon as you remove the stream of water. The one thing you want to avoid is letting the OC wash down your front. I mistakenly let this happen and found myself doing a "firedance" for about 20 minutes (you think your face is sensitive, there are certain parts of the body that just aren't made for this type of abuse). I agree also about the shower, don't use soap, it did seem to intinsify the effects and sort of brought back the burn when I made this mistake. Use some water, but definately don't use any regular soap
And just HOPE that you aren't one of the lucky few who are extra sensitive to OC! When I got sprayed in academy, my eyes were so swollen and irritated that one my classmates had to drive me back. It was at least 2 days before my eyes were back to normal.
We had to do the gas chamber and OC on the same day...I'll take the chamber over OC ANY day!
The only thing I can say is volunteer first. That way you won't get stuck holding the hose for everyone else which minimizes the chances that you'd get hit a peripheral everytime someone gets sprayed. Getting sprayed once is bad enough, try getting hit 7 times!!
Want to try it out?? read a few comments from people who had experienced before....
LEO described it as "canned whoop ass".
WOOOHOOOO IT'S DONE AND OVER! Man I do have to say that getting sprayed was one of the worst pains I have ever felt. I didn't last my min. that I wanted to but turns out they had a scenario for us to do anyway. Partnered up so you spray as well as get sprayed that night. "Ok, ready?" "1,2,3", open eyes, spray, fight off attacks to your gun with a soft stick for 30 sec, get back to car(about 25 feet away), get inside, find the radio, call out to dispatch a code 3 with your location, then walk about 40-50 feet for the water/decon
