Unexpected Revelations

Jim was thrilled about the secondment to CID.  If this went off well, it could be his chance to get back in and relaunch his career.

The one thing he hadnt counted on was being stuck in a lift with the DI.  They had been making enquiries about an assault on the Jasmine Allen and decided to take the lift back down to ground level - only trouble was that it had got stuck.

Cullen took his mobile out of his pocket.

"Any signal, Gov?" asked Jim.

The DI wiped his brow.

"I wish," he replied.  "Have you got any idea of the time?"

Jim pressed the light on his watch.

"Ten to six, why?" he asked.

"Oh nothing, it's just that I've got a date, that's all," Cullen replied.

Jim looked up.

'
The DI's got a date?' he thought.  'This is news to me.'

"Who's the lucky lady?"  Jim asked.

"My wife," replied Cullen.

"You're married?

"Yeah, been married since I was 20," he replied.

"So, what's her name?" asked Jim.

"Celia," replied the DI.

Jim looked at the DI.

'
My God,' he thought, 'of all people - the DI being married!

The DI was a pretty ordinary character and didn't seem to have much personality.  Who would want to marry him?

"It's our anniversary tonight, and we were going to make a real romantic night of it.  Kids were going off to Celia's mum's for the night and we were going to go and just be us, the DI said.

Jim could tell there was a slight air of disappointment in his voice.

"How old are the kids?"

"Zara's ten and Sally's six." Cullen replied.

"God, I didn't think you were married.  I've never seen any photos, replied Jim.

Alex dug in his coat pocket and took out his wallet.  He opened it.

"Turn the light on your watch on and have a look," said Cullen.

Jim took the wallet out of Cullen's hand, turned the light in his watch on and shone it over the photo.  Three female faces stared up at him.  All of them were very pretty.  The older child, Zara, looked very much like her father.  The younger one looked more like her mother.

"So, is this why you don't go on pub trips much?"

"Yeah, well, take it from me, Jim, if you and June ever do get together; make sure you spend as much time together as you possibly can.  Believe me, you need it," said Cullen.

"Don't worry, Guv, I will.  Thanks for the advice," replied Jim.
