"Alex!" Chandler started in surprise. "Who are these men?" he asked, gesturing to the two detectives standing behind Alex .

"They're with CIB."

"CIB, what are they doing here?"

"We spoke about it this morning-"

"We agreed-"

"No. I didn't," Alex reminded him. "You told me...  He sighed. "Save it for the interview."

"The interview? There isn't going to be an interview, I haven't-"

"There is," Alex affirmed. "I'm sorry, sir, but you'll have to come with us, you'll be interviewed and then you'll be asked to make a statement. If you want a lawyer you can call-"

Tom Chandler stared at him in horrified disbelief. "You're not serious-"

"I'm afraid I am," Alex replied calmly.

"You can't do this, you can't do this to me," he asserted, a hint of warning in his voice. There was a reminder of their shared past reflected in his dark eyes that only Alex could see.

"Yes, I can."

"Alex, you know-"

Alex shook his head. "It's no good, Tom. It's over."

"That's Superintendent Chandler-" he snapped in a solid commanding voice.

"I was hoping I wouldn't have to do this," Alex began apologetically despite the fact that he felt Tom did, at least in part, deserve this. "But you've been suspended. Effective immediately."

"You don't have the power-"

"Tom," Alex warned. "Don't make me have you arrested. If you don't come willingly we will take you into custody.

Tom Chandler sighed. The fight seemed to slip out of him as he moved back into his chair, his gaze flickering as he apparently scanned the ceiling for answers, while his mind processed what was happening. He moved forward and stared intently at Alex, seeing the other two men
but not seeing their faces. Only Alex's interested him.

The firm honest resolve and the grave overtones of his expression and tone convinced him that this was all very real, and Alex Cullen was going to do nothing to protect him. It was each man for himself - and they were no longer playing for the same team.

This isn't a complete story - it was written as an AWA activity to create a really exciting first paragraph.  Kacey certainly succeeded  :o)
