I'm sure by now you've heard the sad news...Screamin' Jay died on Saturday, February 12, 2000 at the Ambroise Pave clinic in Neuilly-sur-Seine, a suburb west of Paris. Detailed story here: Screamin' Jay Hawkins dies at 70.

"Screamin' Jay Hawkins...the coolest ghoul, always. Jay and I maintained a friendship from the day I introduced him to J.D. at Midnight Records in 1984 'til the day he left this world (officially that is...Jay was always in another world!)
Jay and I were even planning a re-release of the ultra-rare "Screamin' Jay Hawkins with The Fuzztones - LIVE!" LP as well as a reunion tour with the original NYC line-up. Unfortunately, one Las Vegas promoter wanted to replace The Fuzztones with a band of his choosing and Jay refused. The European distributor that was interested in the re-release dragged their heels. The NYC line-up squabbled over minute contract details. The historic moment never happened.
Jay may have passed away Saturday, February 12, 2000 but one thing I'm certain of....just as Jay himself told me implicitly the last time I spoke with him 2 weeks ago..."I'M NOT GONNA DIE!!!!" He WILL stay alive in MY heart FOREVER!!
