To Whom It May Concern:
On November 15th, 2000, WSVN (Channel 7, Fox News in Florida), aired one of the most horrific exposes I have ever seen. The reporter, Patrick Fraser debuted his "exclusive" undercover investigation of the way dogs in Korea are tortured, then eaten, to produce an aphrodisiac. The Koreans believe that the more pain and suffering a dog experiences prior to its killing, the more potent will be the aphrodisiac. The dogs are hung, then beaten with hammers to break bones slowly so that adrenalin infuses the dogs body, and are often finished off by being boiled or skinned alive (as the footage showed). There are laws that prohibit the inhumane treatment of animals, and the Ministry of Health made the eating of dog meat illegal in 1984 for the unclean conditions that characterize this practice. However, these laws are not being enforced. There are an estimated 2.6- 3 million animals that are subjected to these atrocities each year. There are over 6000 restaurants that serve dog meat.
This issue is definitely deserving of national exposure. Please consider doing a show on this topic. The World Cup Soccer games are going to be held in Seoul Korea in 2002. Now is a good time to bring attention to these horrible practices, as the eyes of the world will be focused on Korea in the next few months. Contrary to claims, this barbaric practice is not part of Korea's longtime culture, but started in the 1980's after the economic boom caused people to turn away from eating dog meat. The dog dealers, fearing their loss of trade, began to market dogs with these mythical claims.
