RED CLOVER
Trifolium

Trifolium has a broad spectrum of documentation
based on folk-use, traditional botanical
medicine and recent research.
I tend to classify it it as a mighty
nutritive AND alterative (detoxifier).
It is rich in vitamins and minerals.
Recent research indicates potential
as a potent carcinogenic inhibitor.
It is used in many formulations
addressings many "female" imbalances.
It has been used to help cleanse and clear
the blood of many toxins, including heavy metals.
It has been emloyed as an antidote to diarrhea
(though I've not used it in this manner) and
to treat acute and chronic pulmonary ailments
(mixed with other herbs).
It is one of the herbs
in Rene Caisse's classic 8-herb formulation
(I make a 5-herb version
which definitely includes Trifolium).
To date, I have not read of any contraindications
for use and it is generally safe for the very young
(has a mild sedative effect with children)
as well as for the elderly.
It makes a nice-tasting tea
which is cleansing, clearing,
nutritive and with healing potential
that we may never fully understand.
The flower and/or leaf (aerial parts)
are used for making an infusion (tea).
Try 3-4 Tablespoons to 16 ounces of water.
Drink 8 ounces, twice a day (or as desired)
with an occiasional medicinal holiday.
Be well!

To learn more about trifolium pretense, start here.

Thanks for this most informative post, Rose.
I take Vitex and find it perfect in every way.
But, now you have me intrigued by trifolium pratense.
Would you expound on it
a little bit as to why you said:

"I just love this herb on so many
levels and I'll leave it there
for you to see what you can learn about it.
Have fun!"
Have a good weekend, everyone :-)

Hi Kathy,
James Duke recommends
Red Clover or Kuzu (Kudzu root)
to balance hormones.
These are the two best plants for that.
He recommends evening primrose oil
(from the seeds only) for PMS.
These also could cause an abortion,
so you may not want to try
the red clover or kuzu.
Sounds like a two edged sword to me.
The evening primrose sounds like
the best one to me.
Wild yam is uterine tonic and is not
included as one that may cause abortion.
That's the only info I have.
