| The 2001 Falcon Guide of Tahquitz/Suiside has two of Christian Burrell and Brian Gonzales' FA routs listed. One is called "Lip Up Fatty" (5.8) and the other is called "Mercy of the Sisters" (5.8) both 1999. "Lip up Fatty" comes from a ska song by Bad Manners. On the drive home after completing the first assent Christian suggested we call it "Lip up Fatty" and I agreed. After we climbedthe first assent of "Mercy of the Sistes" we sat at the top discussing what we should call it. I suggested we call it M.O.T.S. I explained that it stands for Mercy of the Sisters. While sering a mission for my church the female missionaries (sisters) had the only car. If I wanted to drive anywhere it was on the Sister's time table; thus, I was "at the mercy of the sisters". Christian said that "Mercy of the Sisters" sounds a lot better than M.O.T.S. and I agreed. |
Tahquitz Rock is tucked away in beautyfull Idyllwild California. The aproach is steep and will take between 35 minutes and an hour depending on how in shape you are. There is a huge variety of climbing available at Tahquitz (hand/finger cracks, chimneys, face, lieback) (1-5 pitch routs). PROTECTION: Most of the routes are traditional (ie. not very mant bolts). The "common" gear used at Tahquitz are slings, nuts, and small & medium cams. *Slings- There are a lot of trees and bushes that you can tie into as anchors. Also, very few of the pitches on Tahquitz are perfectly straight; so you will use slings, instead of quickdraws, to reduce ropedrag. *Nuts- You can always find a great place for a nut at Tahquitz; however, nuts are often hard to remove especially if it has held some weight. In other words nuts are great for the leader but terrible for the cleaner. Bring one-an-a-half sets nuts (more of the larger sizes). Often you will have to offset the nut. |
