TOGETHER AGAIN

There definitely will be an Olympic feel to Bela Karolyi's training camp this month.

Four members of the "Magnificent Seven" -- the American women's team that won Olympic gold in 1996 -- will attend the camp together.

Shannon Miller, Amy Chow, Jaycie Phelps and Dominique Moceanu are among the 17 invitees for the camp, which will be held May 13-17 at U.S. women's national team coordinator Bela Karolyi's ranch in Huntsville, Texas.
It will be the first camp for Miller since she announced her return to competitive gymnastics in February after a hiatus of almost two years. Miller had a standing invitation to attend one of Karolyi's camps whenever she felt ready. Conflicts in her schedule have prevented her from attending until now, she said.
"I still had several things left on my schedule, different appearances and things, a couple competitions during the camp times," Miller said.
Miller also has been building a house in Texas with her husband, "which kept us occupied for a while. It was a lot easier to train at home. It just kind of worked out so I can go this month," she said.
The camps are intented to get Olympic hopefuls on the same physical, mental and technical page in advance of the Games this September. In her absence, Miller says her coach, Steve Nunno, has been in contact with USA Gymnastics regarding the camp regimen so he could adjust Miller's training accordingly.
"But for the most part I kind of have my own workout schedule," Miller said. "I'm in a different position than a lot of these girls who are 16 and 17 years old. At 23, I'm probably not going to train the same way that they train. Hopefully it will work for me."
Miller, the most decorated gymnast in U.S. history, is attempting to make her third Olympic Team. She says that each day she is getting closer to regaining her competitive edge.
"I get more prepared every day that I go to the gym -- the longer I have, hopefully the more prepared I will be," she said. "But I'm looking to peak at the Olympic Games, not right now in May. Right now I'm just working my routines and skills and getting into physical shape."
Is she pleased with her progress so far?
"I'm pretty pleased," she said. "At the end of December, I wasn't even able to do a kip cast handstand on bars. Now I'm doing practically full bar routines that start from more than a 10.0 (difficulty level)."
"It's nice to see the time frame and how much I've improved. But I also have to look forward and see how much can I accomplish between now and my first major competition."
Moceanu and Phelps attended Karolyi's camp in January but were not invited back for subsequent camps until this month. Moceanu earned the second invitation based on her performance at a "B" camp in March. Phelps has been rehabilitating her often-injured knee.
Chow has participated at every Karolyi camp since their inception in January. She recently helped the U.S. women's team win gold in the team competition at last month's Pacific Alliance Championships in New Zealand.
The May class will be the biggest one since January. Among the invitees are Elise Ray, who won the all-around gold medal at Pacific Alliance, and Alyssa Beckerman, who anchored a U.S. women's team that won a team gold medal at the Spieth Sogipa competition last month in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Beckerman also won the all-around title.
Other invitees include U.S. national champion Kristen Maloney, Vanessa Atler, Jeanette Antolin, Erinn Dooley, Marie Fjordholm, Robin Phelps, Sierra Sapunar, Tasha Schwikert, Jennie Thompson, Morgan White and Lindsay Wing.
Karolyi also will host an "evaluation camp" in the two days prior to the May 13 camp. The U.S. coaching staff will take a look at several young athletes and determine if their skills have reached a level where they can be invited to stay for the senior camp.
Evaluation camp invitees are: Angela Beam, Kendall Beck, Stephanie Carter, Monique Chang, Jamie Dantzscher, Mylan Dodd, Annabeth Eberle, Michelle Emmons, Katie Hardman, Carri Nagle, Jeana Rice, Brittany Smith, Marline Stephens, Amanda Stroud, Kristen Stucky and Rachel Tidd.
