Elinor Levine for Treasurer
Candidate Statement

Our union, CUE, is at a critical moment in its development -- with Fair Share fees on the way and, we all hope, with a strong contract in our near future.

As one of CUE's founders, I have worked hard to sustain the success we achieved in becoming the exclusive bargaining agent for UC clericals. I believe it is important to have the involvement of our members in all important decisions, whether by direct vote on such matters as our dues structure and Fair Share arrangements, or by active participation in local affairs.

CUE is unique: Our members exercise direct control over every element of our organization. During this period of transition, as CUE adapts to having fair share resources and increasing members, we must continue to rely on democratic principles and practices. Cue's commitment to rank-and-file membership control will serve our union well as we prepare for the changes ahead.

I am running for Treasurer because I believe I am qualified to retain an active role in Cue's leadership and because I have proven qualifications for this position.

I have been an Administrative Assistant at UC for 15 years, and I have worked for the past seven years on the preparation and administration of complex budgets. From our first days as a union, I've worked closely with our treasurer setting up financial systems that meet the needs of our complex organization. The advent of fair share fees present a tremendous challenge, and I believe that I can deal with it with the meticulous care and the broad overview that this position requires. We must have a system that guarantees the integrity of our finances and the ability of locals to maintain the greatest fiscal autonomy.

I also look forward to working to provide members with accurate and timely financial information.

I ask you to vote for me and for the candidates I believe have the talent, the dedication, and the experience to build on Cue's remarkable achievements as a strong, member-led union fully committed to establishing a strong, activist presence at each campus.

The candidates that I believe are best qualified to lead CUE into the next stage of our development are:

  • Claudia Horning for President
  • Mark Covington for northern California vice-president
  • Debbie Ceder for southern California vice-president
  • Craig Alderson for chief steward
