Debbie Ceder for Southern Vice President
Candidate Statement

I have been employed at UC Santa Barbara for 13 years in the Physics Department as a Principal Word Processing Specialist. I first found out about CUE when I was approached to sign a card calling for a decertification election. The person at my office door was from out of town, worked as a clerical at UC, and was taking her personal time to talk to me because she felt it was important.

It was inspirational to me to see people just like myself (talented, under-appreciated, and underpaid) doing something constructive not just for themselves but for all UC clericals.

Since joining, I have done grievances and counseling, been the bargaining representative for my campus, led the local steering committee, and been an active participant in the local Coalition of UC Unions. Through my leadership, Santa Barbara became the first local charter of CUE and has the first draft constitution ready for ratification. I am on the statewide Literature committee, co-chair of the Web Committee, and primary designer of the new CUE web site.

As a member-founded, member-driven union, CUE has set unique standards of openness and responsiveness. I have seen what we clericals are capable of doing. I believe in our members' ability to run this union effectively and I am committed to helping others grow and participate.

It is important to me that we maintain this union as a democratic organization, run by the members. Key to that is open dissemination of information. If elected, I will work to guide CUE through this important transition. I intend to utilize the Internet in new and innovative ways to keep information flowing freely.

I will continue to encourage CUE to work in coalition with other UC unions, to increase our effectiveness with UC and the state legislature.

With the new flow of resources, and influx of new members, CUE will hire staff and formalize our structure at both the state and local levels. I will work to find a balance so that CUE will run efficiently, yet maintain our commitment to member participation and involvement at every level of the organization.

In asking for your vote, I also urge you to vote for those who I believe can help motivate, educate, and empower clericals to guide and strengthen CUE through this new era:

  • Claudia Horning (President)
  • Mark Covington (Northern Vice President)
  • Elinor Levine (Treasurer)
  • Craig Alderson (Chief Steward).
