Claudia Horning for President
Candidate Statement

RIGHTS! RAISES! RESPECT! are the goals set by CUE members, and I am proud of how far we have come together.

As a founding member of CUE and the first CUE member at UCLA, I shared in the vision of creating a member-run union for UC clericals. This took both leadership and the determination to develop the structure to support clericals becoming decision-makers and leaders themselves.

It has been rewarding to see the gains made possible by member control: Winning the right to represent all UC clericals; growing locals on every campus, even where there had been no union presence before; UC forced to distribute last year's wage increases without union concessions. Now we appear to be on the brink of the best contract UC clericals have ever had and our membership is growing faster than ever. Members from Davis to San Diego are involved, making decisions, moving the union forward.

As we collect fair share fees, our challenge is to use those resources to establish offices and hire adequate staff, while increasing opportunities for members to be involved and continue to lead CUE. With fair share income and our statewide structure in place, we now have the opportunity to strengthen CUE's local campus organizations.

As a member (Southern Vice President) of CUE's statewide Executive Board, I have demanded member access and participation in statewide bodies and fought to have members vote on fair share. I have led numerous workshops at southern campuses.

As CUE/UCLA Chair, I have worked to increase membership and develop new leaders. As a steward, I have filed grievances and unfair labor practices. I have helped members develop fight-back committees in departments facing reorganization and layoffs.

I will continue CUE's alliances with the other UC unions. Union solidarity has already yielded positive results, such as the recent hearings held in Sacramento on UC's disreputable labor practices.

Your vote for me as CUE's President will ensure a healthy future for the strengths and virtues that have made CUE the unique, member-driven union that we have created together. Together, we will win the Rights! Raises! Respect! that we deserve. Vote for me, and the following people to keep CUE moving in the right direction:

  • Debbie Ceder (Southern Vice President)
