Section 2: A registered, full time student with at least a 2.5 grade point average (gpa) will be eligible to try out for the Gold squad during Spring tryouts. The Gold squad is restricted to rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors only. First year transfer students are not eligible to try out for the Gold squad. Incoming freshmen, upper classmen, and first year transfer students, upon registering full time, will be eligible to tryout for the Blue squad in the fall. Upon completion of the Fall semester, the members of the Blue squad will have their grades examined to determine if the squad member (s) has a gpa of at least a 2.5. Section 4: All cheer squad members are required to carry at least 12 hours a semester. Exceptions for carrying less than 12 hours are made for graduating seniors only. All squad members must get the signatures of a member of the coaching staff and the Athletics Director before dropping a class. When a class is dropped, an updated schedule must be given to a member of the coaching staff within one week. ARTICLE II: ELIGIBILTY (cont.) Section 5: Only those students willing to commit themselves to at least 20 hours of practice/games time per week should try out for the squad(s). You may be asked to give more than 20 hours of time each week. Section 6: Only those students willing to maintain a positive attitude and a willingness to work with teammates and the coaching staff to develop skills should tryout for the squad(s). Section 7: You may not cheer on any other squads once you have signed the NC A&TSU cheer contract. If the coaching staff is made aware of the fact that any cheerleader is on another squad, that cheerleaders position on the NC A&TSU squad will be terminated immediately. ARTICLE III: SELECTIONS Section 1: In the spring, members of the Gold squad will be selected. The squad will consist of rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors currently enrolled at NC A&TSU. Tryouts for the Blue squad will be held in the fall. This squad will consist of incoming freshman, sophomores, juniors, seniors, and transfer students. Section 2: The Competition squad will consist of all members of the Gold squad. Members of the Blue squad may be used for the competition squad, as well as former NC A&TSU cheerleaders who are currently enrolled at NC A&TSU and meet all cheer squad requirements. All members of the Gold squad are required to participate in any competitions. If a member of the Gold squad chooses not to go to competition, their position on the NCA&TSU squad will be terminated immediately. Section 3: Tryouts will be held at a time designated by the coaching staff. Notifications of the location and time will be posted prior to the tryouts. An interest meeting will be held to give general information about the cheer program at NCA&TSU. Section 4: The coaching staff is responsible for the selection of the squad(s) and will have the final decision regarding who makes the squad. Tryouts will be judged by the coaching staff and one neutral judge. The coaching staff will not entertain discussions about scores and/or results. ARTICLE IV: SELECTION REQUIREMENTS Section 1: The required tryout material may consist of cheers, chants, dances, and jumps, which will be taught. Stunts and gymnastics will not be taught during tryouts. Spotters will be provided to those who are in need. If a basic knowledge of gymnastics is not possessed, it is recommended by the coaching staff that gymnastics not be performed. Section 2: Gymnastics skill alone is not enough to make the cheer squad(s). Fulfilling the gymnastics requirement does not guarantee a position on either squad. All tryout material is important. Section 3: Although we strongly recommend that athletes meet all requirements, the coaching staff looks for potential that can be developed. Previous cheer and gymnastics experience is not required and does not hurt those aspiring to make either squad. ARTICLE VI: RESPONSIBILITIES Section 1: The Gold squad will perform for all football games, home or away. The Blue squad will perform for home football games only. The Gold squad will perform for all mens basketball games, home or away. The Blue squad will perform for all womens home basketball games. Section 2: The Competition squad will consist of cheerleaders from both the Gold and Blue squads chosen by the coaching staff. Former NC A&TSU cheerleaders who are currently enrolled at NC A&TSU and meet all cheer squad requirements may be selected as well. All members selected to be on the competition squad are required to participate in all competitions. If a member of the competition squad chooses not to go to competition, their position on the NC A&TSU squad will be terminated immediately. **Also found in Article III, Section 2 ARTICLE VIII: PHYSICAL FITNESS Section 1: All members of the cheer squad(s) are required to participate in the Athletic Departments weight lifting and conditioning program.
